N9 crash claims life of Castlecomer woman

A young Castlecomer woman has died following a tragic road traffic collision on the N9 near Paulstown in Co. Kilkenny.

The collision between a car and a truck occurred at 5.20pm on the Monday August 30 . The driver of the car, Claire Nolan of 5 Kilkenny Road, Castlecomer was fatally injured in the collision. A male passenger in the car received minor injuries and was removed to St Luke's in hospital where he was treated for minor injuries before being discharged. The truck driver escaped uninjured.

The road at the scene of the crash is closed pending a technical examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The local Parish Priest Mons Michael Ryan said that it was frightfully sad that someone so young had died on the road. He said:

"It's a frightfully sad accident because she was such a nice young woman. Claire lived all of her life in the Castlecomer area and she was very well known. The tragedy is all the more poignant for the family as her grandfather Pat Purcell was only buried two weeks ago at Moneenroe."

A Castlecomer resident told the Kilkenny People that “No where is immune from the tragedies that are occurring on our roads in Kerry, Mayo and Kilkenny.”

The principal of Castlecomer Community school Seamus O’Connor said that he remembered Claire as a very good student and that she would be sadly missed by the community. He said:

“Claire was a past pupil of the school. The school is very shocked to hear of her death. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. She got on very was as a student while she was here and all of her former teachers are very saddened to hear of her death.”

The funeral arrangement have not been finalised yet but funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

It’s the second death on the stretch of road between The Roayl Oak in Carlow and Paulstown in Kilkenny - just two miles apart - in the space of eight days.
