The final of Kilkenny’s Education Centre Primary School’s Debating competition took place last week with Scoil Bhríde, Paulstown and Holycross N.S. Thurles taking part.

Holycross emerged winners by the narrowest of margins and now go forward to meet the Wexford/Waterford region finalist. The motion being debated was ‘The Junior Cert has too many subjects.’ Their journey began before Christmas when applications were invited from eight primary schools in the Carlow/ Kilkenny. Nth. Tipperary region. The first eight schools to apply were Graiguenamanagh B.N.S.; Gowran N.S; The Rower N.S.; K.S.P. Kilkenny; Holy Family G.N.S. Askea, Carlow; Scoil Angela, Thurles ; Scoil Bhríde, Paulstown and Holycross N.S.

The debates have proved to be a great hit with students and teachers alike. Adjudicators were amazed at the ability of such young students to debate with such conviction .

Mr. Paul Fields, director of Kilkenny Education Centre was high in his praise for the pupils and their teachers and spoke of the lifelong merits to be gained from partaking in such initiatives. He thanked all the adjudicators and organisers for giving so generously of their time.

Holycross are wished every success as they go forward. The All Ireland Final will take place in U.C.D., Dublin on March 19th.
