Plays, poetry and music at 'Comer Writers and Arts Festival
COMEDY, drama, poetry and a selection of workshops are in store at this year's Castlecomer Writers and Arts Festival which takes place from September 24-26.
The workshops, all of which are free, will be led by Grace Wells, Michael Massey, Dr Maura Downey and Siobhan Simms, with topics including a Writers Workshop, Writing Your Family History, and How to Get Published.
This third annual festival will kick off with an official launch, including wine and cheese reception, on September 24 at 6.30pm in the town’s Thomas Coogan Library. That evening’s entertainment will then continue with a trad music night in The Vaults bar from 9.30pm.
September 25 will include activities for a variety of ages and interests. The day’s events will start at 10am, with a presentation of prizes in the Black Diamond Poetry Competition worth 500 euro in the Castlecomer Discovery Park, followed by viewing of art and photography exhibitions in the Discovery Park and Tom Shelley’s Chatsworth Art Gallery at 11.30am. Writers workshops will start at 2pm in the Castlecomer Community Hall, and an open-mic session will take place from 4.30pm in Bollards Lounge.
A triple bill of drama will be staged in the Community Hall on both September 25 and 26 at 8.30pm, with proceeds going to the Friends of Castlecomer District Hospital. Starting with a monologue from Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine performed by Sinead Byrne, the night of theatre will then include the James McLure play Laundry and Bourbon, directed by John Coogan and starring Sarah Brennan, Martina Harding and Eils O’Rourke; and the evening will conclude with the sketch Football Fever by Coon’s Kilquan Players. Admission is 8 euro (5 euro for OAPs) and tickets can be booked on 056 4441330.
Festivities on September 26 will include a Family Fun Day from 12.30-6pm in the Discovery Park, including a Treasure Trail based on fairy stories, “If You go Down To The Woods…” children’s stories in the woods, bouncy castle, face painting, fancy dress on a favourite story book theme, pony rides and barbeque, and a grand finale at 5pm with Glee Dancers and Pyrotechnix.
The evening will then conclude with a second run of the theatre performances Shirley Valentine, Laundry and Bourbon and Football Fever at 8.30pm in the Community Hall.
