Radio play seeks input from people with long-term illness

PEOPLE with a chronic or long-term illness are invited to take part in a new radio play commissioned by the Callan-based chronic illness self-management course, Ceart Patientwise.

The play will be broadcast in December on KCLR 96fm, which is also a sponsor of the project.

The initial funding was provided by the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme to create a unique and inspiring Chronic Illness Radio Play. The Artist in the Community Scheme is managed by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts; the funding is limited to four to eight artistic projects across all art forms each year.

The project was initiated by the Ceart Patientwise co-ordinator, Anne Cody; and the concept and direction was developed during workshops conducted by playwright Rebecca Moran that explored chronic illness through theatre, writing, and arts-based methods with a group of participants with various chronic illnesses.

The radio play will explore chronic illness from the perspective of the patient and of the illness itself, using ‘voice’ as an artistic concept. Over the next few months, Rebecca Moran will conduct theatre and drama-based workshops to further explore the original script. These workshops will lead to the casting, rehearsal, recording and then the broadcast of the radio play in December.

Anyone living with a chronic or long-term illness of any description is invited to take part in the workshops, which will take place in Kilkenny in September. The drama-based workshops will explore the script and will be conducted in an inclusive way in a fully accessible space, where there are no limitations on participation. No prior drama experience is necessary.

Anyone interested in participating in the project can contact Anne Cody at CEART PatientWise at 087 9028534 or email annecody@ceart.ie.
