Thomastown to host ceramics festival
THOMASTOWN will be host to an international Ceramics Festival over the first weekend in September.
The 2010 Ceramics Ireland International Festival exhibition brings together diverse makers including Sara Flynn, Etain Hickey and Sinead Glynn from Ireland; Richard Notkin from the US; Walter Keeler and Brendan Hesmondhalgh from the UK; and Jiansheng Li from China.
The exhibition will open on September 3 at 6.30pm at the Grennan Mill Craft School, Thomastown and will be open to the public on September 4 and 5. The festival will feature the invited makers demonstrating and discussing their work.
Sara Flynn explores the subtle nuances of porcelain in flowing, bulbous forms; the forms explore curves and lines inspired by nature. Etain Hickey uses the form as a canvas, where she paints strong colourful women, draped in detailed fabrics. These women are interpretations of traditional icons clothed in patterned fabrics.
Richard Notkin addresses political issues in his work, where he utilises hand carved tiles, after smoke firing they are arranged to create large installations with obvious war and political commentary.
Brendan Hesmondhalgh captures the characters of animals in his sculptures from pelicans sitting on a fence to frogs leaping through the air.
Walter Keeler is renowned for his salt-glazed stoneware and deals mainly with functional ware.
Jiansheng Li works with several clays from porcelain through to stoneware bodies, the finely decorated porcelain forms contrast with his sculptural work, which explores horses trapped or emerging from the ground.
