Three babies were born in St Luke’s Hospital on New Year’s Day, the first of which was new Kilkennyman Darragh O’Callaghan, son of Sheila and Niall O’Callaghan.

And Kilkenny wasn’t the only county represented among the new holiday births at St Luke’s, according to the Health Service Executive (HSE). A girl was born to Winifred McCarthy of Thurles, County Tipperary on New Year’s Day, and three boys were born to Carlow parents in the hospital on Christmas Day.

In Waterford Regional Hospital, just one baby was born on New Year’s Day, with little Tommy coming into the lives of Amy and Gerard Mitchell of Ballybeg at two minutes past midnight.

Cork’s first baby of 2012 is also a Cat. Baby Grace Mary O’Brien was born at 2.51am on New Year’s Day in Cork University Hospital. Grace Mary was born to her proud parents Andrew and Deirdre O’Brien. The O’Briens live in Carrigaline, County Cork but Andrew is originally from upper White Bridge, Kilkenny.

Andrew’s parents Paddy and Mary were delighted with the arrival of their granddaughter. “She’s a great little doll and it is great excitement for the new year. We are thrilled to bits and Andrew is over the moon with the new arrival,” said Mary O’Brien.
