Kilkenny CBS celebrated a landmark occasion when Tony O’Brien and his wife Frances arrived to our school to partake in the official presentation of the first ‘Tony O’Brien Business Scholarship’ to CBS student John Brennan of Paulstown.

A Piltown native, former CEO of Cantrell and Cochrane, Mr. O’Brien, who also served on the boards of numerous companies and State Boards. He approached CBS school management early in 2011 with his generous offer of a considerable bursary to be made available to business students in our school.

The Principal, Mr Tom Clarke, welcomed everyone to the presentation and thanked Tony O’Brien for his generosity and congratulated John Brennan as the first recipient. Mr O’Brien then explained his choice of Kilkenny CBS as down to the school’s long-standing contribution to the fabric of life in the city. He went on to say that Kilkenny CBS had a ‘wonderful balance’ across all aspects of school life and that this was a major factor in selecting Kilkenny CBS as the receiptient of this scholarship scheme. The qualifying candidates will be accepted into the prestigious Quinn School of Business in University College Dublin. The Quinn School is the only internationally accredited institution of its kind in Irelnad. John Brennan completed his secondary education in Kilkenny CBS in June 2011 and is currently pursuing a Business and French degree in UCD John was at all times in his 6 years at CBS a diligent, hardworking student who took a keen interest in sport. The unassuming Barrow Rangers clubman particularly enjoys his hurling. John returned to his alma mater on Friday in the company of his proud parents Paddy and Margaret and spoke at length to a large gathering of Sixth Year students, members of the teaching staff and management and board of management members about his experience thus far in UCD He expressed his gratitude to all in the CBS and thanked Tony and Frances O’Brien for making the opportunity available to him through the scholarship. Mr Clarke also stated that it is anticipated that 3 further Business students could avail of this Scholarship at the end of the Summer this year. As a gesture to Tony ( an avid Kilkenny Hurling supporter) CBS PE Teacher , former pupil and All-Ireland medal winner Matt Ruth presented Tony with an autographed Kilkenny jersey in the presence of the Liam McCarthy Cup. Matt also presented Frances with a bouquet of flowers. Principal Tom Clarke thanked everyone for participating in the presentation and invited everyone to the Home Economics Room for refreshments. The whole school would like to express sincere gratitude to Tony and Frances O’Brien and also wish John Brennan every success in his academic pursuits.
