The HSE has advised that revised traffic arrangements will be in place St Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny from today (Tuesday) in order to facilitate ongoing construction work.

A €13 million redevelopment project featuring a new Emergency Department, Acute Medical Assessment Unit, Day Services Unit (dedicated to the late Susie Long), Library/Education Centre (part funded by the University of Limerick and the RCSI) and new hospital entrance and concourse is underway at St Luke’s. This work is being carried out by Walls Construction Ltd and is due for completion in October 2014.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised of the following access and traffic arrangements at the hospital:

Entrance 1 (nearest city centre) will be ‘Set Down’ access only for motorists and pedestrian access for the main entrance door, out patient clinics and the X-Ray Department. All ‘Set Down’ places at St Luke’s must be vacated within 20 minutes. No access for vehicles via this entrance to the Emergency Department or any of the car parks.

Entrance 2 (proceeding along Freshford Road, away from City Centre) is not accessible to pedestrians or vehicles, as it is for construction traffic only. Entrance 3 (on Freshford side; furthest of 3 entrances from city centre) isow the main entrance to the hospital for the public and staff.

In addition, the current one-way traffic system applies throughout the hospital grounds, and additional car parking spaces have been provided at the main hospital car park. Three new ‘Set Down’ (20 minutes maximum) places have been made available outside the Emergency Department.

Pedestrian access from the main car park to the Hospital will be through the Emergency Department entrance. This entrance will also be the temporary route to the Out Patients Department. Further directional signs have been erected within the hospital.

An alternative pedestrian access from the car parks is to walk back out through the new main entrance at the Freshford side (Entrance 3) and walk left along the footpath to the hospital entrance at the city side (Entrance 1).
