DANIELA’S LA CONNECTION

Being hailed as the next ‘Big Thing’ or ‘One to Watch’ in any profession can be exciting, flattering and encouraging. Not to mention, slightly daunting as you take on the pressure of having to live up to such expectations and deliver on a promise, much like a firework that bursts with enthusiasm and sprinkles it’s gold dust wherever it lands… no pressure then!

Then there are exceptions, like Daniela Cardillo, who takes it all in her stride and hits the mark at every turn. Kilkenny native, Daniela graduated from NCAD with first class honours in 2011 and has since embarked on creating her own jewellery collection and frankly, hasn’t stopped since.

A baby, in business terms, she has become something of a hot sensation on the international jewellery scene and is now stocked in Dublin, Kilkenny, New Zealand and recently Los Angeles!

When Jennifer Nicholson (daughter of legendary actor Jack Nicholson!) was sourcing stock for her chic new boutique in Venice, LA she tracked down Daniela’s unique pieces that are now sitting on her shelves… Now that’s what you call international!

It is no surprise, as her pieces are the perfect balance of cool, unique and surprisingly affordable. While picking her brain in her studio, it was no surprise to hear that she loved the designer Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow as I imagine she shares their vision of everything decadent and on the edge…

Fascinated by Victorian techniques, we leaf through a rare book from 1867 that shows hairweaving techniques that have inspired her current collection. Using horse hair (that is incredibly strong!) she dyes and weaves her gorgeous strands and then adds her magic touch to pull the piece together. I love that she resorted to using an old hat box, bar stool and fishing weights to construct her own weaving table when she couldn’t source one and that her earlier pieces feature horse hair from her own horse…

Her passion for Taxidermy is always evident and I am very drawn to her quirky and, just the right side of gory, pendants where she encases the skulls/bones of small creatures to create stunning one-off pieces… Mr. McQueen would have approved…
