A TIMELY STOP at Kilkenny GC saw Niamh Spratt capture Lady Captain Margaret O’Rourke’s prize on Sunday.

Playing off 16 Niamh, with her Waterford connections, was heading to the Munster senior hurling final in Cork that afternoon so tee off her round with her mother Joan at 7.45am.

Niamh had her score of 66 posted shortly after 11am and was the first score to be returned from the 135 ladies who played. Niamh shot halves of 43 and 39 for an 82 gross and 66 net to keep her run of good form going - she also had 41 points to claim third place in President Joe Nolan’s prize to the ladies.

Bridget Norwood, playing off 22 handicap, returned a great score of 63. It was the best of the day but she had to settle for second place as she had not played in the requisite number of competitions to qualify for first prize. The gross was won by Mary Dowling (scr) with a 72 gross.

More than 100 women attended the supper in the clubhouse at 8.45pm, which was followed by the presentation of prizes.

BAR CUP - The Men’s Bar Cup qualifier was held on Saturday and the leading qualifier was Brendan Hogan. Playing off 4 handicap, Brendan shot a 69 gross for a 65 nett. He had seven birdies on his card with halves of 33 and 36.

Brendan recently achieved a new low of 4 handicap and hopes to break into 3 before the season ends. Two other players John Bracken (17) and Colin Furlong (15) also returned 65s.

The draw is posted on the men’s notice board and the first round is due for completion by 6th of August.

SCRATCH CUP - The men’s 36 Hole Junior Scratch Cup will be held on Sunday. The competition is over 36 holes and the entry fee of E25 includes lunch.

SINGLES - The Ladies and Gents Open singles, which was cancelled on Wednesday last, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, August 17.

LADIES - The Ladies ABC stroke competition produced a great score from Bridie McGarry. Playing off 8, Bridie shot a two over par gross of 75 for a 67 nett to win Class A. Bridie’s handicap has been cut to 7 as a result of her score - Bridie and her partner Joan Cody on the Finn trophy team have lost five shots between them over the last week with Bridie going from 9 to 7 and Joan from 19 to 16.

Class B was won by Catherine O’Neill (27) with a 69 nett and Class C went to Ann Daly (33) with a 71 nett. The Gross was won by Mary Leahy Browne (4) with a 77 gross.

SOCIAL GOLF - The Social Golf continues on Friday evening after the Rugby Club classic. Sign in at 6.45pm for shotgun start at 7pm.

MATCHPLAY - The next round of matchplay competitions are due for completion by the following dates: Men’s Club Singles - Tuesday, August 23; Men’s Foursomes - Saturday, July 23; Mixed Foursomes - Saturday, July 23; Men’s Fourball - Monday.

The preliminary round of the Men’s Scratch Matchplay is due for completion by Monday also.

INTER-CLUB - The semi-final of the Men’s Provincial Towns Cup (all matches played off flat and Handicap not lower that 9 in 2010) against Borris has been scheduled for today (Wednesday) at 4.30pm. Kilkenny will have home advantage in five of the nine matches.

Representing Kilkenny at home will be Derek Shelly (9), Ciaran Colfer (10), Fergal Cantwell (8), Michael Keenan (10) and Jamie Byrne (9). Away in Borris will be Niall O’Gorman (8), Eoin Sweeney (8) Paddy Crotty (8) and John Byrne (10). Reserves: Pat Walsh, Vinny Hayes, Larry Carroll, Sean Kelly, Sean Boland.

JUNIOR/JUVENILE - There will a Junior/Juvenile open day on Monday, August 8 and a Junior/Juvenile pro-am on Monday, August 15. The junior committee intend entering two teams in this pro-am from the winners of juvenile competitions over the next few weeks.

All intending to play in the Junior/Juvenile Open Day should give their names to a member of the junior committee. Full details are on the Junior/Juvenile board or from any committee member.
