Marble City enjoy good times at championships

The Laois, Carlow, Kilkenny County Board, held their county championships on Saturday and Sunday. Some great bouts were witnessed.

Marble City boxing club were represented by 15 young athletes. Paul Hayes (Marble City) Boy 1, 31kgs division was first in with a dominating performance. He controlled the fight from the bell and scored a convincing victory.

Bernie Connors was next in the semi-finals of the boy 1 36kgs division. Bernie gave an excellent display, working well off the counter against an opponent that had a reach advantage. Bernie got the verdict.

Kevin Kehoe (Marble City) Boy 3, 55kgs division final gave a sterling display against seasoned opponent, Conor Dowling. Kevin started slowly. At the end of the first the scores were close.

From the bell in the second round Kevin was on the front foot, scoring with good combinations and put in good defensive work. He out-pointed his opponent. The third round produced much of the same fare.

Kehoe’s control of the bout showed why he is one to watch in the upcoming Leinster championships.

The Marble City club came won 11 titles which was a fantastic accomplishment for boxers and coaches. This is the clubs 20th anniversary, and the future looks bright with prospects off all ages on the horizeon, and good coaches to get the best out of them.

Special thanks went to Willie John Kehoe, Ross Kehoe, Paul Cody, Richie Ruth and Stewart Leahy, who are coaches at the Marble City cllub. They have put great work into the club as has Noel Kehoe, who has been involved in the sport for decades.
