Provincial Towns Cup defence up and running with good win

The Provincial Towns Cup team from Kilkenny golf club, winners of the trophy last year, started the defence of the title with a home draw to Athy and emerged victorious by 5 matches to 4. The match was close. In Athy, James Young had a comfortable win but the other players Des Woods, John Meagher and John Byrne were beaten.

At home James Bateman won on the 16th and Michael Keenan on the 17th. The remaining three matches were all square playing the 18th. Kilkenny picked up two of the three with Ciaran Colfer and Jamie Byrne winning. Larry Carroll was beaten.

Kilkenny play the winners of Enniscorthy and Mount Wolseley in the next round. The Towns Cup team are managed by Frank Dalton and Rob O’Shea.

The Barton Cup team who defeated Mountain View face Borris with an away draw in the next round.

In the Irish mixed foursomes, Kilkenny, under the management of Luke Kelly and Sheila Brennan, took on Castlecomer and lost 3½ to 1½. In Kilkenny, Peter Ryan and Niamh Kelly got off to a bad start and were eventually beaten on the 12th. Paddy Crotty and Ana Lyons were 2 up playing the 14th and were looking good for a win. The tide turned and they lost on the 17th.

In Castlecomer, Brendan Hogan and Dervilla O’Byrne won 4 and 3. Anthony Cleere and Helen Devane were beaten. The remaining match involving Aidan Phelan and Breda Roche was all square on the 18th when called in.

The team came very close to picking up two matches in Castlecomer, but unfortunately weren’t able to secure one of the matches at home.

The Duggan Cup team, managed by Dick Curtin and Pat Foley, took on Ennniscorthy and with three of the five matches in Kilkenny were fancied to progress. However, they suffered defeat, the pairings of Pat Collins and P.J. O’Reilly and Murt Farragher and Richie McEvoy both lost on the 16th in Enniscorthy. At home Peter Ryan and Tom Lawlor were one up with three to play but lost on the 18th.

John Burke and Jim Ryan were 2 up on the 17th when called in. The other pairing at home, Martin Hanrick and John Marnell, were one up on 14 when called in.

The ladies Junior Cup team, under the management of Kathleen Gaffney and Connie O’Reilly, defeated the Curragh 3-2 in Mount Wolseley. Mary Norton won on the 17th. Phyl Doyle and Niamh Kelly won on the 18th. Bridie McGarry lost on 17th and Mags Cuddihy on 19th.

They play Castlecomer in the next round.

The men’s Club Fourball qualifier was played over the weekend. The leading qualifiers were Owen Phelan (10) and Paul Brennan (6) with a score of 6 up. Two other pairs also returned 6 up, Ollie Cullen (8) and John O’Leary (18) and Ray Lonergan (2) and Gavin Lonergan (6).

All scores of 3 up qualified and half of the approximate twenty 2 ups qualified. The draw is posted on the men’s board. The first round is due to played by May 12.

The ladies Granard Scotch foursomes played last week was won by Paula Bradbury (16) and Barbara Teehan (26) with 39 points.

The senior ladies competition was won by Toni Hayes, Barbara Schofield, Teresa Brandon and Maureen McDonald with 43 points. Second on 39 points were Joan O’Sullivan, Ann Gunning, Mary Gorman and Phil O’Carroll.

The men’s senior competition was won by Noel Skehan (10), Noel Power (20), Phil Lenehan (27) and Tom McDonald (25) with 67 points. Noel Skehan was in great form with 11 entries on the card accounting for 25 points. Noel Power had an eagle two when he holed out his second shot on the third hole.

Second were John O’ Leary (18), Frank Dalton (21), Sean Breathnach (23) and Eddie Geraghty (22) on 64 points.

The competition on Thursday, April 12 was won by Pat Drennan (15), Andy Hughes (16), Finbar Coughlan (21) and Christy Rainey (21) with 67 points. Christy had a birdie 2 on the 6th. Andy did likewise on the 10th.

Second on 63 points went to Billy Burke (10), Michael O’Reilly (19), Reay Brandon (22) and Joe O’ Driscoll (26).

PRIZE PRESENTATION: Note that the men’s prize presentation which was due on Friday, May 4 has been changed to Sunday, May 6 (10pm). The Lady Captains prize to the men and the Captains prize to the ladies will also be presented.

FOURSOMES AND MIXED FOURSOMES: The entry sheets for the men’s foursomes and mixed foursomes are on the men’s notice board under the stairs. The entry fee is €12 per pair for each competition. Players are requested to place their names on the sheets and place the appropriate entry fee in the envelopes provided.

Any member who does not have a partner lined up please leave name in the office and the club will pass it on if someone else is looking for a partner.

ADOPT A GREEN: All volunteers who put their names forward for the adopt a green programme are requested to turn up if they are available on Monday (7pm) for repairing pitch marks and general maintenance of the greens. This programme will commence on Monday, April 21.

AON INSURANCE SCHEME: Note details of the AON insurance scheme are posted on the gents and ladies notice boards. The scheme cost €20 and gives coverage for all eventualities on the golf course and also lost or stolen golf clubs. Anyone interested please add your names to the lists on the board.

OPEN SINGLES: The next ladies and gents Open singles competition will be today (Wednesday).

SNOOKER: The singles snooker final was won by Martin Hanrick who defeated Gabriel Maher by two frames to nil. The presentation will be made on Sunday, May 6 (10pm). The losing semi-finalists, Luke Kelly and Christy Power, are requested to attend.
