THE Kilkenny College girls’ junior hockey team completed a memorable double when they beat neighbours and rivals Loreto Kilkenny to lift the South East Schools Junior Cup on Monday.
The under-16 team gained some revenge for their senior counterparts, who lost their cup final to Loreto some weeks ago. Determined to take their chances, the College juniors pressed hard from the start and had most of the attacking play. Nearing the break it was Sarah Mullins who broke the deadlock and who ensured that the ball crossed the Loreto goal line to make it 1-0 to the home side.
The College held on to their slender lead for much of the second half. The Loreto looked dangerous on the break, but were unable to capitalise on chances created.
As the clock ticked down and nerves began to show, it was Emma Duncan who settled the account firmly by making it 2-0 from a penalty corner and ensuring that the title went to the College, who were coached to League and Cup success by Daphne Sixsmith. The team was captained by Sammy Willis.
