Kilkenny sensation, Clare Grace from Callan Boxing Club will make history with the Irish ladies senior team at the weekend.

The ladies team will be fighting what will be their first senior international, and the 18-year-old from Callan will line up beside World champion, Katie Taylor and the elite of the sport in this country. The opposition will be supplied by Holland.

“This is a great honour for Clare, the Callan club and Kilkenny,” insisted trainer, Jimmy Walsh. “The honour is well deserved, because Clare has won four national titles during the last few months.”

The hard hitting Callan girl has beaten all before her over the past few months, taking the senior Youths title in May, then the under-21 crown, the intermediate title in December before winning her first senior Elite championship in January.

Clare will travel to the National Stadium, Dublin on Thursday for the weigh-in for her bout in the welterweight division (70kgs). She will be fighting in the ’Stadium on Friday night.

Young Grace was invited by the Irish boxing authorities to travel to China in May for an Elite training camp, but she declined because she is preparing for the Leaving Certificate.

She is daughter of Michael and Eileen Grace from Tullahought.
