The handicap system proved itself again

THE New Ross seniors group were lucky again weather wise when the rain cleared for their weekly fixture, which was played in dry but windy conditions. Sixteen teams faced the starter and it was a battle royal for victory.

THE New Ross seniors group were lucky again weather wise when the rain cleared for their weekly fixture, which was played in dry but windy conditions. Sixteen teams faced the starter and it was a battle royal for victory.

The handicap system operated is eminently fair to all. This was further emphasised when there was a three way tie for first position. All three teams scored 90 points.

Picking one player from each of the four categories means that teams are evenly balanced, and then it’s up to who plays best on the day.

The team of Danny O’Leary (13), Peter Goggin (16), Fr John French (19) and Jamesie Murphy (23) gelled well and they were declared the eventual winners after a count back. A solid back nine of 46 points against 42 for the second and third placed set the foundation for their victory.

Then it took the best score on the last six holes to find the runners-up, who were Tom Tyler (14), Sean Murphy (15), Larry Doyle (17) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (20). Third were Hughie O’Connor (14), Michael Logue (18), Robert O’Dwyer (18) and Tom O’Neill (20).

Only one tape was returned for nearest the pin. John O’Gara took the prize on the 9th hole.

A few spaces are still left on the timesheet for the second last Seniors’ Alliance outing of the year at Clonmel golf club on Monday, August 13. Timesheet with Jamesie Murphy (051-421151).
