THE dashing Kilkenny woman who recently bumped the great Sonia O’Sullivan off top spot in the Irish athletics record books has been acclaimed as a star of the month.

Ciara Everard, a member of the Kilkenny City Harriers club, turned in a record breaking performance when winning the Intervarsities 800-metres title in Nenagh.

Ciara, who is studing physiotherapy in UCD, hit the tape in 2.05.76 to eclipse the long standing record of the great Cobh athlete. Indeed, O’Sullivan’s previous record of 2.05.90 had defied all challengers for 22 years.

The flying Everard didn’t stop at that. A little over a week later she ran a tactically astute race to win the 800-metres national senior indoors championship in the Odyssey Arena, Belfast.

In this race Ciara was boxed in a lot of the way, but with 300-metres remaining a gap opened on the inside of the track and she shot through. She drove strongly for the line and broke the tape in 2.07.34.

To celebrate her terrific double victory, Ciara Everard, will be honoured as the Hotel Kilkenny and Kilkenny People sports star of the month for February 2012.

All the monthly winners will be honoured together at the annual banquet early next year, which will be the 26th staging of the Hotel Kilkenny and Kilkenny People celebration dinner.
