CAPTAINS at Callan golf club for the 2012 campaign, Sean Walzer and Sheelagh Foster celebrated their annual dinner and social evenings with spectacular success at Callan GC on Saturday.

The evening began in style. Michael Walsh catered in brilliant fashion, arranging a whiskey reception courtesy of Tullamore Dew which was followed by a meal which was well received. The social evening was also a huge success, with music and craic going long into the night.

Thanks went to all who made the evening a big success.

TURKEY - The Turkey and Ham competitions continue to form part of the weekend schedule at the club, running until the festive season arrives.

WINTER LEAGUE - Members have the option to compete in the Winter League over the coming weekends. Numbers competing in the League have been healthy, with the weekend option proving popular to golfers.

The competition runs until Spring, when the playoff winner will bag a new set of irons worth over E500. There will also be a series of other prizes up for grabs.

Golfers who enter both the Turkey and Ham competition and Winter League are reminded that the computer is for the Winter League cards only. This is very important to ensure the smooth running of the Winter League. Cards should be clearly marked indicating what competition that golfers have entered.

MEETING - The annual meeting of the men’s club will be held in the clubhouse on Saturday. Nomination sheets for officers are available in the front hall.

This year’s annual meeting for the ladies club will be held at 8pm on Saturday, December 8 with all lady members asked to attend. Nomination sheets for the ladies section are available in the locker room.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto jackpot. Lucky dip winners (E30) were Noel Lennon, Pat Fitzgerald and Ciara Connick. Sellers’ prizes went to John O’Neill and Michael Walsh.

Next week’s jackpot will be E1,050.

Monday: Men’s RGA, 11am to 1pm. Tuesday: Ladies Day.


GOLF got off to a slow start at Gowran Park GC on Sunday, with frost forcing an 11am shotgun start for the members’ Winter League.

The day ended on a winning note for the club’s competitions secretary Ger Treacy who, playing off seven, scored an impressive 27 points to secure top spot. Tony Dooley (16) took the runners-up spot on a countback with 26 points.

The Winter League continues next weekend with a timesheet in place for Sunday.

CHRISTMAS GALA - Members are reminded that the Christmas Gala Day and golf outing will be held on Saturday, December 15. The competition will be a team event, with a draw for partners being made at lunchtime on the day. Following the golf there will be a prize-giving ceremony and social evening, along with presentations to respective club fourball and matchplay winners.

All members are encouraged to attend.

AUTUMN SINGLES - Owing to poor weather conditions the Autumn Singles competition was cancelled last week.

The competition will be back in play tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday for visitors and members, with two more opportunities to qualify for the grand final, which will be held on Friday, December 14.

GOLDEN GOLFERS - The Golden Golfers were out in force on Friday with an 11 hole singles competition in play. Pat Roche (16) secured top spot with 27 points on a countback from Gerry Doyle (11). Jim Fisher (20) and John Barcoe (13) took third and fourth spots respectively with 24 points, Jim edging third on a countback.

The birdie hole (third) was won by Kieran Mahon (12), who also had birdies on the sixth and eighth.

This week’s competition will be a team event, with all welcome. Draw is at 10am every Friday.

WITH THE golfing year drawing to a close at Castlecomer GC the ladies club are getting ready to welcome in their new captain.

Lady Captain Helen Dunne, who had a very successful year, will now hand over the reins to incoming Captain Marjie Gannon. Helen was thanked for all her hard work by all the ladies.

The Lady Captain’s dinner will be held on Saturday, December 15 in the clubhouse. Names must be given to Patricia Doheny.

SINGLES - Winner of the ladies Singles competition was Delia O’Donohoe, who took the spoils after a close match with Anne Ring.

FLOWERS - The flower show, which was held at the club recently, was a great success. A large good crowd enjoyed Marian’s demonstration from Rocameer, Flowers of Castlecomer. She got everyone in the festive spirit with her lovely arrangements.

GOODBYE - Everyone involved with Castlecomer GC was sorry to see the departure of Catherine Flood. Having served the club as secretary for the past 18 years, Catherine has been the ever-pleasant and welcoming face in the office and a familiar voice at the end of the phone.

All at the club wish Catherine the best in her new life in Canada. She will certainly be missed by all.
