The new hole layout has been unveiled at Castlecomer GC.

The layout eliminates the climb to the old 11th tee box and result in changes to the playing order of six holes. The changes brought favourable comments from visitors and members alike. There will be a competition every weekend to enable members and visitors play the course in its new format.

MEETING - The annual meeting of the men’s section of the club will be held in the clubhouse on Tuesday at 8pm.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 13, 17, 20 and 24. Tickets cost €2, with a jackpot of €20,000 to be won.

RESULTS - Results, men’s open singles, November 2/3: 1 Ciaran Kelly (7), 45pts; 2 Ken Doheny (21), 43pts.

This year will live long in the memory as a time when members put their shoulders to the wheel and helped to improve Callan GC.

While there are too many people to thank individually their efforts can be seen everywhere. From the paintwork on the entrance to the club to the showers, upstairs seating and bar area the club has benefited from its overall face-lift. A team of volunteers have kept the shop running while the course continues to receive great compliments.

The secret of the continuing success of the club has been the wonderful voluntary efforts of so many members. All efforts have been noticed and are vital to the future running of the club.

SOCIAL - Captains Paul Cashin and Rose Brophy invite all members to join them for their social evening in the golf club on Saturday, November 23. It promises to be a memorable night with tickets (€25, including dinner and entertainment) available from the bar and the office.

RAFFLE - The club is currently holding a raffle with a year’s free membership for 2014 up for grabs. Cost of entry is €5 per ticket or €10 for three.

ALLIANCE - Helena McCormack had a great win in the junior alliance in Gowran Park, carding a score of 40pts.

Callan played host to the minor alliance on the same day. More than 70 golfers played, with local member Aoife Lanigan among the prize-winners.

MEETING - The annual meeting of the ladies section will be held in the club at 7.30pm on Monday, December 2.


Members of the senior section will hold their Christmas party at Mountain View GC on Tuesday, November 26.

The day will begin with the seniors competition at 10am, followed by the presentation of prizes and Christmas dinner, concluding with the usual card game. Members of this group who are not playing regular golf and who wish to attend are asked to contact John Coleman or the clubhouse.

SCRAMBLE - Club members are reminded to register for the Members Christmas mixed scramble, which will be held on Sunday, December 1 with a 9am shotgun start. This will be followed by the presentation of all outstanding prizes including Golfer of the Year, club singles and doubles winners and runners-up, as well as all the monthly medals, Champions Cup and Winter League winners.

WINTER - After four rounds of the Winter League Colm Hayes has extended his lead to 42pts in category one after scoring 46pts last weekend. He is followed by Eddie Walsh on 27pts and Michael Waugh with 18pts. Tommy Coyne is the category two leader on 21pts with David Fitzpatrick on 18pts. Vincent McCarthy has moved to third place with 15pts followed by Nicky Byrne and Frank Kavanagh on 12pts each. Philip Parsons and Joe Earle are joint leaders in category three on 33pts apiece. They are followed by J.J. Holohan (19pts) and Pat Ryan (16pts).

The weather was largely kind to the 53 teams who entered the open four-person team event at New Ross GC at the weekend.

New Ross Community Hospital was the nominated charity, with the club captains delighted to see so many members support the worthy cause. The winners were Patrick Fitzpatrick (14) and the Morrissey trio Nigel (13), Frankie (9) and Tommy (8), who scored 101pts to finish two ahead of Tom Purcell (21), Noel Quinn (14), Eddie Shanahan (13) and Peter Reid (8). Third place went to Ray Kent (16, Scarke), John Somers (16), John Hartley (16) and James Kent (15).

FRIDAY - Winner of the first Friday Open was Paddy Shannon (11) with 38pts. Richard Cahill (7, Knightsbrook GC) was second on 37pts with Mark O’Mahony (6) third on 35pts.

The Friday Opens continue throughout the Winter and will be played as qualifying competitions for handicap purposes. Placing is permitted under local rule on the fairways only. Entry is €15 for members and €20 for visitors, including mixed grill. Tee times can be reserved via the website

SPAIN - Captain Seamus McGuinness capped a great year when he led the New Ross 3Ts team to victory over a local team at La Cala Vijas in Spain. Seamus was joined by club professional James Roche, Joey Furness and Maria Burford. The team won the trip to Spain by clinching the national championship at the K Club last month.

MEETING - The men’s annual meeting will be held on Friday at 8pm. All members of the men’s section are encouraged to attend.

LADIES - The ladies will hold the last of their presentation nights tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm for all outstanding prize winners.

The first of the 14-hole turkey competitions will be held on Wednesday, November 20. These will continue up until the Christmas party.

The annual meeting of the ladies section will be held at 8pm on Wednesday, November 20.

SENIORS - The weather was good to the seniors when they played their weekly competition on Thursday.

With forward tees and placing everywhere it gave all 16 teams the opportunity to bring in a good score. The team of Andy Ronan (14), Tommy Tyler (16), Pat Traynor (17) and Joe McLoughlin (18) carded 95pts to emerge clear victors. John Kennedy (13), Mick Logue (16), Luke Power (17) and Les Jasjaztri (27) claimed second prize on 91pts while third spot went to Willie Whitty (17), Willie Naddy (19), Tom O’Neill (20) and Tom Kent (27) on 86pts. Nearest the pin prizes went to Denis Kirwan and Tommy Tyler. Players are reminded that when there is a shotgun start no team is allowed to start on the second tee box as it causes hold-ups.
