The winner with 32 points was Johnny McEvoy (18). Johnny was round in 10 over par for his round which gave him 32 points. He won on the count back from Paddy Crotty (7).

Paddy was only one over par for his round. Third was Martin Duggan (14) with 31 points and fifth place went to Seamus Rockford (11) on the same score. The gross was won by Harry Duggan (4) with 27 points.

The presentation of prizes will be in February on a date to be confirmed.

Saturday’s men’s crosscard was won by Pat Walshe (10), John O’Leary (18), Gabriel Maher (18) and Brendan Hogan (4) with 66 points. The runners-up were Ollie Cullen (11), Tommy Comerford (12), Peter Ryan (17) and Kieran Hoban (10) on 65 points.

Third and fourth places went to three man teams who had four points added to their scores - Ben McGarry (14), Joe Lawlor (16) and Larry Gittens (11) 64 points (60+4) and Daragh McNamara (7), Rob O’Shea (10), John McCarron (16) 63 points (59+4).

The weather was wet and cold and only 37 players participated.

The senior men’s competition on Thursday was won by Michael Doran (16), John O’Leary (18), Jack Nolan (22) and Eamon Molloy (26) with 68 points. Michael was the birdie man on the team with birdies on the 3rd, 8th and 12th.

Second were Noel Skehan (15), Finbar Coughlan (22), Christy Rainey (22) and Joe Ledwidge (24) on 68 points. The highlight of their card was eight points on the 10th hole where Christy Rainey and Joe Ledwidge recorded birdie 2s’.

Third were Denis Carey (13), Jimmy Rhatigan (19), Martin Treacy (19) and Joe Leech (26) on 67 points with Martin Treacy having successive birdies on the 5th and 6th.

The annual meeting of the seniors club will be held on Thursday, January 23 (4.30pm) provided there is golf on the day. If weather prevents golf on Thursday the meeting will be held the following week.

The annual meeting of the senior men was postponed last Thursday due to the sudden death of Austin Kiely. Austin was due to come in as men’s Seniors Captain.

Austin was buried in his native Ballinasloe and many members travelled down on Friday night and Saturday for the funeral.

The senior ladies competition last week was won by Pat Walsh, Breda Kavanagh and Jane Duggan with 34 points. The runners-up were Mary Prendergast, Greta Nicholson, Josie Bolger and Mary Gaffney on 31 points.

Third were Sheila Brennan, Mary Gorman and Mary Shields on 31 points.

The senior ladies held their annual meeting recently. Senior Captain for 2014 is Joan O’Sullivan.

CAPTAINS’ DRIVE IN - Captains Denis Brophy and Catherine King will hold their drive in on Sunday, February 2 (11am).

The sheet for names is on the notice-board inside the bar door.

The competition will be a four person team event, with two scores counting. The draw for teams will be made the previous evening (6pm). The format will be the usual with a hot plate served after the golf.

MEMBERSHIP - Membership renewal notices went out to members last week. Members are reminded that fees are due within four weeks of the notice of renewal.

This year members have the opportunity to spread their payments over nine months if they so wish by signing up for direct debit. The details are on the reverse of the renewal notice.

Members who wish to avail of the Direct Debit option must return the completed mandate by January 31.

The first direct debit payments will be processed on February 15 and they will continue for nine months. The final payment will be processed on October 15. Members who pay by credit card will be charged a fee of 1.6%. There will be charge attached to debit card payments too.

ETIQUETTE - The mats in place on the par three are to be used during the week to help preserve the tee boxes.

Members should also note that caddy cars and trolleys are not to be brought inside the ropes surrounding the greens. These ropes are in place to protect the surrounds of the greens.

Players are requested to refrain from scooping the ball out of the holes with their putters and damaging the collars. All players should remind their playing partners to comply with these rules. Members are also requested to continue repairing pitch marks and divots.

The course staff have commenced work on reshaping some of the bunkers and regrading the faces of others. As a result some holes may be closed over the coming weeks to accommodate these works.

The course staff, under the supervision of Sean Dowling, did a very professional job on the construction of the new bunkers on the 18th last year and no doubt will do likewise with these new changes.

WINTER SPECIAL - Golf Winter special is available until March 31. Green fee plus hot plate of the day, tea/coffee costs €35.

SNOOKER - The entry for the snooker singles has closed. The draw is posted on the men’s notice board. All participants are requested to keep to the dates for the various rounds.

First round games are due to be completed by Friday, February 7. The handicaps were allocated by the snooker handicap committee.

BRIDGE - Bridge lessons continue on Mondays’ (7.45pm).

GOWRAN PARK

A solid return of 28pts saw Michael Fitzpatrick win the members’ 11-hole singles competition at Gowran Park GC.

Olan Corcoran (8) and David Vaughan (7) were second and third on 27pts apiece, Olan finishing runner-up on countback.

SPRING - Rathdowney golfers took the qualifying spots in the latest round of the Spring Series. Lar Ryan took the lead spot with a great score of 42pts, followed by Martin Devlin (9) and Tony Coady (13) on 37pts apiece.
