The second round of the county cross-country championships saw a large crowd flock to Castlecomer on Sunday morning.

The event, held near Dysart by permission of the O’Shea family, races for juveniles (uneven age) and men in the over-45 category.

St Senan’s started the day in pole position to lift the Juvenile Cross-Country Shield with St Joseph’s and Kilkenny City Harriers (KCH) their main challengers. This added urgency to the proceedings but Senan’s were equal to the challenge, finishing the day with 33pts to ensure the Shield returned to Kilmacow for another year.

The day got off to a start with non-championship races for boys and girls in the under-7 and under-9 age groups. Winners at under-7 were Caoimhe Power (Thomastown) and Liam McGuire (Gowran), while under-9 golds went to Ella Cusack (Gowran) and David Williams (St Senan’s).

At under-11 level there were golds for Aine Kirwan (Thomastown) and Cathal Beirne (St Joseph’s). St Joseph’s edged out KCH for team gold in the girls’ race while St Senan’s earned team gold in the boys’ race with Castlecomer second. Thomastown won team bronze in both races.

At under-13 there were individual golds for Aoife Allen (St Senan’s) and Conor Clarke (Castlecomer). There were close calls in both team events with KCH winning gold by one point from St Senan’s with Thomastown just behind. In the boys’ race St Joseph’s won team gold by one point from KCH. Castlecomer collected the bronze medals.

At under-15 KCH scooped double gold. Annie O’Connor won the girls’ race despite the strong challenge of St Joseph’s Helen Hoynes and Eva Roche while in the boys’ race Luke Fitzpatrick took gold with his brother Adam taking silver.

In the team race St Senan’s strength in depth gave them gold and bronze in the girls’ race and silver in the boys’ race. KCH took silver in the girls’ race and gold in the boys’ race with Castlecomer boys taking bronze.

The under-17 races had individual wins for Lauren Dermody (Castlecomer) and Sean Power (Thomastown), who saw off the challenge of in-form KCH athletes Peter Lynch and Michael Ryan. Team gold went to St Senan’s in the girls’ race and KCH in the boys’ race.

The girls’ under-19 race saw Rachel Butler mirror her success at under-18 level with Anna Sheehan taking silver. A strong finish saw Michelle Whelan (Thomastown) finish third and lead her team to gold medals. KCH had to settle for silver despite both teams finishing on equal points. The under-19 boys’ race was a clean sweep for St Senan’s with the club winning individual gold silver and bronze and Hugh Morgan leading the club to team gold. KCH were still fighting to the end though and won the team silver medals.

The men’s race was run over a distance of 3km where the dry flat course meant the pace was fast from the off. First man to cross the finish line and claim the title was Jack Carey (KCH). He was followed home by Patrick Bookle (St Joseph’s) and Seamus Power (St Joseph’s) took the bronze medal.

Michael Power (St Joseph’s) finished in fourth place to complete the winning St Joseph’s team with Tim Butler (fifth) and Maurice Keane (11th) completing the KCH team who won the silver medals. Mark Dreeling, Muiris Bric and Marty Kelly won team bronze for Gowran.
