Kilkenny Firsts ladies hockey team scored a good win over Enniscorthy in a lively seasonal debut in Enniscorthy on Sunday.
Although it was an early start for all concerned, Kilkenny turned in a commanding display to run out easy victors. After a series of frantic initial exchanges and short corners, Kilkenny broke the deadlock via a Lauren Thomas corner rebound.
After this the game opened up and 10 minutes from half time, Alex McClure produced a bit of trickery along the endline to set up Catriona Carey for a 1 on 1 against the ’keeper. Catriona found the net, 2-0.
At half time the score was 3-0, Emma Ryan deflecting home after Lynn Darlings’ clever crash ball. In the second half Kilkenny were intent on pushing on.
This dcetermined attitude paid dividend with Lauren Thomas adding three goals. Her last was the pick of the bunch. Carey eliminated the defenders and Thomas struck home first time on the backhand. Later Caitriona Carey provided two stylish efforts, one a backhand chip over the on-rushing goalkeeper.
These came either side of an Enniscorthy goal. This was a very good performance from a Kilkenny side fielding experienced and new players.
The squad also contained an abundance of Ireland and South East representative honours across all positions. They play Muckross of Dublin in Kilkenny College in the Irish Hockey trophy this coming weekend, Octobrer 12/13.
