THE quiet Kilkenny girl with the big punch has blasted her way to All-Ireland boxing glory.

Callan boxing club member, Clare Grace annihilated all before her to win the Irish 69kgs youths (under-18) championship over the weekend.

The hugely talented 17-year-old scored a run away win in the semi-finals. The fight was stopped as per rule with Grace an uncatchable 18 points in front in the third round.

Grace, who fought recently at the World Championships and last year was a bronze medal winner at the European Youths championships, did even better in the final.

The decider lasted no more than 90 seconds when the Kilkenny girl was already a clear eight points in front. Grace’s Dublin opponent was eventually downed by a stiff body punch, and after a count of eight the referee stopped the bout.

“She was in powerful form,” said thrilled trainer, Jimmy Walsh. “She took it all in her stride.”

The Kilkenny girl has been invited to box in Wales this weekend. She will face the silver medalist in her division at the recent Europeans.

The weekend event has been organised by the Welsh ABA and is an all ladies tournament which will be televised in Wales.
