Ladies Senior Cup team heading to All-Ireland finals

The Kilkenny ladies Senior Cup team scored a good win in Tullamore at the weekend in the mid-Leinster area qualifier. They played Blainroe on Saturday morning and won 4½ to ½.

Mary Dowling, Eileen Rose Power, Orla Dunphy and Mary Leahy all won comfortably. Bridie McGarry was also up in her match when called in. On Saturday afternoon they beat the host club by 4½ to ½, again with victories for Mary Dowling, Eileen Rose, Orla and Mary Leahy. Rebecca Mulholland was called in.

The semi-final on Sunday morning pitted them against Wexford. Again they won comfortably, 4-1, with wins for Mary Dowling, Eileen Rose and Orla. Mary Leahy and Bridie McGarry were up in their matches when called in.

The final was against Enniscorthy and was a tight affair. Mary Dowling was out first and won 5 and 4. She never went past the 14th hole all weekend in her four victories. Eileen Rose was involved in a great match and won the 17th hole to go one up. She hit the par 5 18th hole with a drive and five iron to close out the match as her opponent failed to birdie the hole and Eileen Rose had three putts for the match.

Orla Dunphy was out third. She was up in her match through the front nine before losing 2 and 1. Mary Leahy, out fourth, was also up in her match early on before losing 3 and 2. This left the overall match poised at two all with Ann Smee’s match remaining.

Ann was two up after 12 but was pegged back to all square after the 14th. She was unlucky not to win the 16th but won the 17th to go one up and secured the necessary half on the 18th. The full panel at the weekend was Mary Dowling, Eileen Rose Power, Orla Dunphy, Mary Leahy Browne, Bridie McGarry, Rebecca Mulholland and Ann Smee and the team was managed by Liz Cleere and Margaret McCreery.

They now head to the All-Ireland finals in the Grange club, Dublin on August 17 and 18.

Congratulations to Mary Dowling who won the ILGU Scratch Circuit which culminated in Hermitage. The circuit was played over six courses, Co Louth, Royal County Down, Cork, Woodbrook, Lahinch and Hermitage. Players were awarded points for each event with the best four scores from six counting for the overall.

Mary entered last week at Hermitage in third place behind Karen Delaney, Carlow and Deirdre Smith, Co Louth. Mary finished second in last weekend’s competition and overtook her two rivals to secure first place overall on 202 points. She had10 points to spare over the runner-up.

James Young (11) emerged as the winner of the May monthly medal which was sponsored by Prochem Engineering and played over the weekend. James was out in 37 with birdies on the 1st, 6th and 9th. He came back in 40 for a 77 gross and 66 net.

He had two shots to spare from Noel Skehan (13) and Michael Keenan (10) in second and third place on 68s. The gross was won by Graham Nugent on 73. The juvenile prize was won by Morgan Walshe (18) with a 68.

The Smithwicks Scratch Cup will be played on Sunday. It will be the 49th year of Smithwicks sponsoring this event.

The ladies three person team event last week was won by Mary Leahy Browne (4), Sara Leahy (18) and Catherine Leahy (25) with 85 points. Second on 83 points were Ann Lee (22), Joan O’Gorman (22) and Ruth Bourke (15).

The senior men’s competition last week was won by Noel O’Sullivan (15), Pat O’Briain (16), John Bracken (17) and Sean Breathnach (23) with 60 points. They beat Matt Ruth (13), Michael O’Neill (22), Paddy Byrne (21) and Jack Nolan (22) into second place on the count back.

The senior ladies competition was won by Hilda Richardson, Bridie Sloyan and Mary Feighery on 36 points. The runners-up were Sheila Brennan, Joan Mannion and Barbara Schofield on 31 points.

The St Patrick’s KASMA team event on the bank holiday Monday was won by Aidan McCarrick (18), Mountain View, James Bateman (8) and Tony Murphy (13) with 84 points. The runners up on 83 points were Jimmy Rhatigan (17), Gabriel Maher (16) and Nicky Lawlor (20).

FOURSOMES DRAWS: The draw for the men’s foursomes and mixed foursomes have been made and are posted on the notice board. The prelimianary round of the men’s foursomes is due to be played by May 25 and the first round of the mixed is due for completion also by May 25. The onus is on the pairings on the top of the draw to organise the match.

MENS INTER CLUB: The next round of the Provincial Towns Cup is scheduled for Thursday, May 17 (4pm) against Enniscorhty with five matches away and four at home. The home team is James Bateman, Jamie Byrne, Ciaran Colfer and Larry Carroll; away in Enniscorthy David Farragher, Harry Duggan, Aidan Phelan, James Young and John Byrne.

The Pierce Purcell area qualifier will be in St Helen’s Bay on Saturday (12 noon). The team will play in the stroke play qualifier on Saturday. If they finish in the top four they will return for a semi-final on Sunday (8.30am). The final is scheduled for 2.30pm.

O’Reilly and Tommy Barry, John McCarron and Peter Ryan, Colm Sheenan and Terry Mannion, Pierce Cullen and Philip Tierney, Larry Gittens and P.J. Carter, Noel Casey and Michael Butler, Tony Murphy and Kevin Hennessy, Ben McGarry and Des Byrne, Paddy Smee. All players are requested to be in St Helen’s Bay by 10am on Saturday.

GOLF RULES: There will be an information night on the Rules of Golf in the club on Wednesday, May 23 (8.30pm). Dom Murphy, Leinster branch GUI delegate, will host the night. All members are welcome to attened.

JUNIOR/JUVENILE: The Kilkenny under 15 team defeated Gowran 5-nil on Saturday. All matches finished on the 14th. The Kilkenny team was Shane Mahony, Brian Crowdle, Harry Duggan, Mark Power and Kevin Power.

The two reserves, Jay Leahy and Jack Condren, played matches also and they both won on the 13th.

Juvenile coaching continues on Saturday - under-12s 10 to 11am and over 12s’ 11 to 12noon. Please be present at the clubhouse 15 minutes before scheduled start time.
