They’ve kept up a relentless pace all season; now the Kilkenny & District League’s women’s team are just one step from Leinster glory.

The Cats travel to Celbridge on Sunday (kick-off 2pm), knowing that a win over the Leinster League will see them become provincial champions.

“Everyone’s looking forward to the game,” joint manager Fran Egan told the ’People. “The girls are hyped up, but we know when game time comes they’ll be well tuned in for the task at hand.”

The Cats have put together an impressive run on their way to Sunday’s final. Following a 0-0 draw with Kildare in their season opener, Kilkenny really showed their claws when hitting Carlow for six in their second group game.

With early goals from Jenny Brennan (2) and Jenny Reddy the Cats roared into a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes.

A stylish lob from skipper Breda O’Neill, coming in the middle of another Brennan brace, saw the Cats wrap up a comfortable 6-2 win.

The semi-final was a tighter affair but Kilkenny were just as quick off the mark, hitting the Combined Counties for the opening goal within two minutes of kick-off, Jemma Komar turning a Breda O’Neill strike into the net.

The Combined Counties proved to be a tougher challenge, forcing Kilkenny to fight until the closing stages, when Jenny Reddy popped up in the 85th minute for that all-important second goal.

“The semi-final was a tough game, but it’s a measure of what we’ll come up against for the final,” said Egan.

“However, the team is more than up to the task of delivering on the big stage. Once they cross that white line we know they’ll give a good performance.”
