AET - Colaiste win 4-2 on pens

THERE was heartbreak for the girls from Grennan College, who saw their dreams of a place in the All-Ireland final collapse under the pain of a penalty shootout.

The Thomastown side had been crowned Leinster senior B champions just a week earlier, but their run to the final was ended prematurely by Limerick’s Colaiste Iosaef in Thurles on Thursday.

The two sides battled hard against a wind which had a say in the two goals scored during normal time. Thomastown were first to profit, taking the lead on 33 minutes when Shauna Carroll’s swirling corner hit the Limerick net.

Despite the atrocious conditions, Grennan managed to hold on to their lead until 15 minutes from the final whistle. Sensing time was against them, Colaiste Iosaef’s increased efforts were rewarded when a Vicky McMahon cross evaded goalkeeper Victoria Hanlon and ended up in the Kilkenny net.

With neither side seizing the initiative in extra time, the contest went to a penalty shootout. Limerick goalkeeper Sorcha McCarthy proved herself a heroine for the Munster champions, saving a penalty, before Aideen Hayes converted the winning spot kick.
