FREEBOOTERS maintained their 100% record and top spot in the table as the Premier Division season gathered pace.
Fresh from their 6-0 opening day win, the Blues bagged six points and another 11 goals from two games in four days.
On Sunday they won their local derby with Freebooters B, beating their club-mates 5-1 at the Fair Green. A Dessie Hayes hat-trick propelled Sean Doyle’s side on their way, with Paul O’Brien and Eoin Kavanagh also getting on the scoresheet for the winners. David Rice hit the sole reply for Derrick Kenny’s side.
Earlier in the week Freebooters A went one better when they scored six in Durrow to beat the Lions. Back in the top flight the Laois side gave their all in a nine-goal thriller, but were beaten 6-3. The visitors took the spoils thanks to O’Brien (2), Hayes, Neil Murtagh, Greg Morton and Eddie Clifford. Aiden Keenan (2) and Lee Campion scored for the hosts, who bounced back from that defeat with a 2-2 draw against Evergreen B on Sunday, the goals coming again from Campion and Keenan.
Elsewhere on Sunday Evergreen A picked up their second win of the campaign when they beat Fort Rangers. Incredibly, defender Robbie Quan became goalkeeper for the day but still got on the scoresheet. Jamie Owens and Declan McQuillan also scored as the champions saw off Fort 3-1, but only after Eddie Nugent had given Rangers the lead. After two defeats East End United A grabbed their first point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Bridge United A. Scorers in Bennettsbridge were Eddie Fitzgerald and Shane Murphy.
In the midweek games a Niall Kiely strike saw Freebooters B grab a point at home to Evergreen A. Robbie Quan was on the scoresheet for the team from the Kells Road. Their club-mates Evergreen B had better luck, opening their account with a 1-0 win away to Bridge United A, as Dylan Whearty’s goal gave them their first win of the season. There was a first win also for Deen Celtic A, who beat East End United A 2-0 thanks to strikes from Stephen Ruth and Joe Collins.
There will be one final round of midweek games this evening (Wednesday). With no games on Sunday, this will be the last action before the All-Ireland final. The entire League will kick off with a full list of Maher Shield games on Sunday, September 11.
Tonight’s Premier Division games are (kick-off 6.30pm): Freebooters B v Evergreen B, Fort Rangers v Lions A, Deen Celtic v Evergreen A, Bridge United A v Freebooters A.
