Youths take another title

The celebrations continued for the Evergreen Youths as they ended their season with a triumphant treble.

Having already secured the Henderson Shield and the Division One league title, Richard Lowry’s side added the Buckley Youths’ Cup to the trophy cabinet thanks to a win over city rivals Ormonde Villa in Derdimus.

The boys in green were quick off the mark, Bobby-Joe Walsh unleashing a snapshot. The 14th minute strike stung the palms of Villa ’keeper David Sweeney, but he made a solid save.

It was Ormonde Villa’s turn to hit back after that. Finn Dowling thought he had a chance to break the deadlock when Liam Walsh’s threaded pass put him through, but Dylan Drennan got back to nick the ball off his toe.

Evergreen hit back and got their reward five minutes later. Mark Slater provided the chance, firing in a free from the right wing. Bobby-Joe Walsh did the rest, beating team-mate Buckley to the ball to head it home.

Evergreen held that 1-0 lead into half-time, but very nearly doubled it within seconds of the restart. Walsh went close with a teasing snapshot, his effort giving the scrambling Sweeney a moment’s panic, but the ball flashed wide.

Gaby Lapuste, who was heavily involved in his side’s attacks all evening, was at the heart of their next chance. Controlling Ronan Coffey’s flick-on, Lapuste put in a 57th minute cross for Ben Hickey. The chance was there, but Hickey blazed over.

Fast break

Ormonde Villa were no slouches in the second half. After a fast break Liam Walsh was only denied a clean strike by Dylan Drennan’s intervention. However, one of their own attacks would cost them dearly.

Clearing a Kieran Banville corner, Evergreen caught their rivals cold. Ben Hickey pounced on the clearance and dashed half the length of the pitch. Drawing the remaining Villa defenders he had support in the unmarked Bobby-Joe Walsh, but had the confidence to tuck a smart shot inside David Sweeney’s left post.

The goal all but sealed the spoils, but Evergreen weren’t given anything easily. Sweeney denied Mark Slater a goal from the penalty spot, guessing correctly to push the 68th minute spot kick on to the post and then claim the rebound.
