MOUNT JULIET
It was a mixed bag for the inter-club teams who represented Mount Juliet GC during the week.
The ladies Junior Cup team, managed by Dorothy Kilroy, were beaten 3-2 by Woodenbridge GC at Bunclody. The team was Lucia Ahern O’Flaherty. Ruth Mulholland. Sally Gleeson, Freda Mullen and Yvonne Nicoll.
The Duggan Cup team also lost by a similar margin to Castlecomer GC. The match was tied at 2-2 before ’Comer won the last match on the 16th at Mount Juliet. The pairings were Ted Hoyne & Mark Taylor, Dermot Fennelly & Kevin McCartan, John O’Dwyer & Billy Fanning, Martin Brett & Peter O’Flaherty and Tommy Malone & Sean Kiely.
The Irish Mixed Foursomes team managed by Peter Quigley and Bernie Madigan had a good 3½ to 1½ win over New Ross GC.
There were wins for Luke Donnelly & Therese Maher, Dermot Fennelly & Kathleen Hession and Paul Madigan & Mary Molloy. Gavin Smyth & Karen Murphy were called in while Tim Howes/Helen Walsh lost on the 17th.
The inter-club action continues this weekend when the ladies Intermediate Cup team travel to Carlow to play Killerrig GC.
SUMMER - The first round of the O’Dwyer Golf Summer League was won by Colin Codd, who scored 40pts to blitz the field by four shots. Colin had nines of 18 and 22 in his round which featured a birdie three on the difficult 13th hole.
P. J. Butler and Tom Kelly filled the minor spots with 36 and 35 points apiece. The ladies section was won by Niamh Strudwick with 36 points. Her round included a birdie two on the 14th.
The second round of the league is on Sunday.
LADIES - The ladies Wednesday morning nine-hole social competition continues to grow in popularity. Last week’s competition was won by Alison Hoyne.
CALLAN
The Duggan Cup team had a tough battle on their hands as they represented Callan GC in their match with Gowran Park GC at the weekend.
At home seasoned Cup players Jim Kirby & John Healy were first out, followed by Patrick O’Donovan & John Kennedy and Denis Collins & Joe Madigan. Away in Gowran were Kevin O’Driscoll & Tony O’Driscoll, followed by Seamus Cuddihy & James Hillman.
The opening matches were a mixed bag. Jim and John halved the 18th to win by one while Kevin and Tony lost to Gowran’s Dan Stallard and Pat Staunton, who were unbeatable on the day.
In the second away match James and Seamus were five down standing on the 10th tee, but threw everything at the Gowran men to stand all square on the 18th. Three fantastic shots later, the hole was conceded to give Callan another win.
The match was all square when Paddy and Johnny were beaten on the 17th, before Denis and Joe sealed a great win after going all the way to the 19th with their opponents before a great putt from Denis saw the locals win the hole and the match.
INTER-CLUB - The men’s South Leinster team are practicing in both Callan and Borris this week as they prepare to take on Borris in the preliminary round. The Jimmy Bruen panel will begin practice very shortly and all of the panel will be notified over the coming week. The Pierce Purcell is in Gowran this year, with the team busily preparing for their match.
LADIES - The ladies Intermediate Team had a good start to their campaign when beating Courtown GC in Bunclody. The matches were neck and neck, with the locals narrowly winning 3-2.
Representing Callan on the day were Mary Lanigan, Helena McCormack, Betty McGrath, Berna Walsh, Marie Gorey. Subs were Jo Staunton and Pauline O’Brien, with Catherine Davis the team manager.
The ladies Challenge Cup team will play Carrick-on-Suir at Mount Juliet GC on Wednesday, May 3. Team manager is Pauline O’Brien.

LOTTO - There was no winner of the golf club lotto jackpot. Numbers drawn were 7, 29, 30. Lucky dip winners (€30) were Noreen Power, Richard Needham and Kay O’Donnell. Sellers were John Kirwan, Joe Cuddihy and the Bar. The jackpot is now €3,050.

GOWRAN PARK
The chance to win a two-night break at a four star hotel is up for grabs at Gowran Park GC this weekend.
The club will host an open singles stableford this Friday, Saturday and Monday (there will be racing on Sunday). Timesheets are open, with bookings available from 056-7726699. Entry fee is €20 for visitors.
LADIES - The ladies Minor Cup team had a great win after a tightly-fought match against Carrick-on-Suir GC in New Ross. The team of Maura Coe, Catherine O’Driscoll, Eithne Donnelly, Joan Murphy and Margaret Bower had a 3-1 victory, with the last match called in on the 18th. Manager is Ann Farrell.

SINGLES - The Thursday open singles competition continues tomorrow (Thursday) with a timesheet in place. Every week the top three golfers, plus equals, go through to final on August 26. DUGGAN CUP - The Duggan Cup team were beaten 3-2 by Callan GC.
JUNIOR - The junior golfers put up a great show last weekend when competing in the Fred Daly Trophy against Kilkenny GC, one of the favourites to win the trophy. After some top class golf they lost out in three matches, won one and were two up in the final match when called in.
Both Conor Cleere and Harry Foley lost in Kilkenny, while Cian Russell lost out on the 14th at home. Jack Foley was in tremendous form when winning 5&4. Ciaran Whelan was two down at the turn before making a great comeback to be two up on the 15th in the top match. Gowran Park will now play in the Fred Daly Shield, with the team looking forward to a good run in that competition.

NEW ROSS
Excellent golfing weather saw a big crowd turn out for the Easter Classic competition at New Ross GC.
The two-person champagne scramble was won by the mother and son combination of Ann (13) and Paul Conway (14), who carded a score of 61pts.
Jim Byrne (9) and Michael Logue (20) were second on 59pts with Brian St Ledger (10) and Harry Rheinhart (16) third on 58pts. The ladies prize went to Marguerite Sutton (22) and Carmel Delaney (36) with 57pts.
TUESDAY - The first 14-hole Tuesday evening fourball, which was played in perfect conditions, was won by Andy Lawlor (11) and John Joe Cullen (18) with 35pts (L6). Colm Kehoe (11) and Seamus Phelan (13) were second with 35pts, while Joe Doyle (7) and Declan Clarke (14) were third with 35pts also.
LADIES - Results, ladies 18-hole stroke, April 19: 1 Martina Reidy (34), 69 nett; 2 Sheila Wade (32), 70 nett; gross Liz Bennett, 84 gross; 3 Ann Bailey (20), 71 nett (L9). Longest drive: Denise Bolger. Nearest the pin: Mary J. Maher.

BRIDGE - Bridge has now finished in the clubhouse for Summer. It will resume in October.
GET INTO GOLF - An information evening for people joining the Get into Golf Initiative will be held in the clubhouse this evening (Wednesday).
INTER-CLUB - The Junior Foursomes team will square up against Carrick-on-Suir GC in Tramore tomorrow (Thursday) at 2pm.
The Minor Cup team will face Borris GC in Callan on Friday at 3pm while the Revive Active team take on Faithlegg on Sunday. Three matches will be played in New Ross and two in Faithlegg. Tee off in both venues will be at 2pm.
The Junior Cup team bowed out of their competition last week, going down to an excellent Kilkenny team.
SENIORS - The seniors enjoyed their outing to Bunclody GC. Winners were Cormac Farrell (12), Jimmy O’Neill (19), Dan Quigley (20) and Larry Shannon (20) with 89pts, pipping the team of Eamon Delaney (16), Patsy Farrell (19), Willie Naddy (20) and Jamesie Murphy (23) by one point. Third spot went to Bob Doyle (10), Paddy Mahony (19), Jamesie Wallace (21) and Jim Kehoe (24) with 87pts.
The seniors hosted their Faithlegg counterparts on Thursday. With red hot scoring, the team of Pat Traynor (18), John Fitzpatrick (19), Dan Quigley (20) and Pat Kehoe (22) took the spoils with 104pts.
A better back nine saw Johnny Watson (16), John Murphy (17), Dick Cahill (20) and Liam Glasheen (20) pip the team of Eddie Keher (10), Ger Lodge (18), Vincent McElroy (18) and Tom Kent (26) to second place.
For the duration of the Summer season the seniors will now tee off at 10am sharp with the draw for teams at 9.40am. This new arrangement comes into force from tomorrow (Thursday).
The timesheet for the Autumn Seniors Alliance outing at West Waterford on Monday, May 8 is available from Jamesie Murphy, tel 085-1846172.
The outing will be a two person champagne scramble with over €500 in prizes.
RATHDOWNEY
The Rathdowney Duggan Cup team had a great win over Abbeyleix in their match.
