Kilkenny land five handball titles

Mary Phelan and Ciara Mahon, Clogh handball club travelled to Kilbeggan to play Clodagh and Ciara McManamon, Mayo in the ladies intermediate doubles All-Ireland final. They won and the girls attain to senior status now.

In the junior doubles All-Ireland final, Ciarán Neary, Talbot’s Inch and Brendan Burke, Kells played Dale Cusack and Tadhg Carroll, Cork in an evenly contested final. The Kilkenny duo struck gold.

In the intermediate doubles, the Funchion brothers, Patrick and Peter from Kells played Ollie and Pat Conway, Galway where the Kilkenny brothers won in two straight games. It was a great week for Peter after winning the intermediate singles final the previous week. The lads now move to senior status.

In the Masters A doubles final Michael ‘Ducksie’ Walsh, Talbot’s Inch and D.J. Carey, Goresbridge claimed another All-Ireland title when they defeated Fergal Coughlan (senior) and John Cawley, Clare. This was added to the singles title ‘Ducksie’ won the previous week

In the over 35 ‘B’ doubles All-Ireland final, Stephen Barcoe, Goresbridge and Canice Quigley, St Canice’s defeated J.P. O’Connor and Mick O’Toole, Limerick in two straight game.

In under-14 singles Ciarán Cooney, Clogh travelled to Clarecastle to play Tiarnan Agnew, Clare in the All-Ireland final. Ciarán was unfortunate to come up against a very strong player. He was beaten in two straight game, but it was a great achievement to reach the All-Ireland final.

Leinster juvenile teams

In the under-12/13 team of six Kilkenny played Wexford in the Leinster final and it turned out to be a great battle. Kilkenny lost by 10 aces.

The under-14/15 team of six also played Wexford in the Leinster final. Again some great handball was played and there was great excitement at the end when winning by three aces. The team now meets Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final.

On the team were Shane Cullen, Cillian Lafford, Rory Lodge and Conor Hoban, Kells; Aidan Barry, Clogh and Jack Hayes, Windgap

The under-16/17 team of four were defeated by Wexford in the Leinster final.

Under-13 boys B singles, Eamonn Brennan, Clogh beat Thomas Brennan, Clogh.
