NOT EVEN a change of venue could interrupt the momentum of Kilkenny’s first duathlon of the 2013 season.

More than 200 people turned out for the Kilkenny Triathlon Club (KTC) event, which was switched from Mount Juliet to the grounds of Kilkenny Castle.

The Castle Park proved to be an ideal venue for the duathlon, with plenty of space for the event. The race started with a 5km run in front of the Castle, incorporating a loop around the duck pond before continuing along the banks of the River Nore, turning up onto the Castle Road and back into the Castle Park.

The run was pleasant and flat, with a water stop along the way and plenty of marshals to give directions.

The run in and bike out of transition went off without a hitch with big signs and marshals telling duathletes where to go. The 20km cycle was a challenging one with a number of twists and hills. The Blackquarry Hill was the first sight facing competitors heading out the Castle Road, but it was plain sailing as the cycle headed out the Waterford Road towards Danesfort.

There was a sharp left turn at The Harvester pub and the cycle was relatively flat over the next few kilometres apart from a sharp decline into Bennettsbridge, which may have been welcomed by some.

The cycle route came back in along the Bennettsbridge Road and down the Blackquarry Hill, leading back into the transition area in the Castle Park. The second run was a 3km offering, with the spirits of the duathletes raised by the great crowd of spectators camped at the finish line to cheer them home.

The day was a great success for the KTC, with member Eoin Molloy the first person over the finish line in a time of 1 hours 6 minutes. He was followed 50 seconds later by Philip Nolan of Belpark in 1.06.50 with last year’s winner of the KTC’s Mount Juliet duathlon Keith Heary third home in 1.07.10.

In the women’s event Caroline Conway (Sportsworld AC) was first in 1.17.15. KTC members Nichola Nolan (1.21.13) and Anne O’Gorman (1.22.58) were second and third respectively. There was a large showing of KTC members, all of whom completed the duathlon in respectable times.

The club thanked all their supporters and sponsors, OPW, Kilkenny Gardaí, Co Council and The Order of Malta for their assistance. Thanks also went to XL stores, who provided refreshments, and to the marshals for their assistance.

The second race in the series will be held in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle this Saturday at 11.30am.
