Kilkenny enjoyed a very successful weekend at the second 60x30 national handball championship finals which were staged in the county. Each club hosted different grades and the competition ran off smoothly with great hospitality at every venue.

Talbot’s Inch hosted the men’s Open competition in which Barry Goff and Colin Keeling took the honours. Brian Minogue and Nicholas Anthony represented Kilkenny in this grade. They reached the Plate semi final.

Brendan and Diarmuid Burke came through a strong men’s C field to claim the honours after five games. This was a great win for the Kells men, who took their first nationals title. Brendan also reached the men’s C final of the 40x20 so it was great for him to get over the line.

On Sunday Seamus Reade and Paddy O’Reilly won the Golden Masters grade and Eddie Bourke. Nicky O’Reilly played the Masters grade but never got going.

Aoife Holden and Dearbhaill O’Keeffe won the under-13 Plate final and John Walsh and Brian Mahon won the under-17 Plate final. Shane Dunne and Ciaran Cooney reached the final of the under-13 section but they found their Tyrone opponents too hot to handle.

Ciarán Neary and Patrick Funchion were in great form. They won the under-23 doubles, beating 2009 minor All-Ireland champions, Stephen Cooney and Ian McLoughlin 31-14 and Kildare’s Niall O’Conner and Cork’s Tadgh O’Carroll 31-4.

After the weekend’s events it was clear that 60x30 handball is alive and well in Kilkenny.
