All set for second O’Brien tournament

THE second Tommy O’Brien memorial handball tournament get underway in Talbot’s Inch last night and it promies to be a terrific event. There are eight pairs in the senior competition with last year’s beaten finalists, Timmy and David Clifford the first to take the court against Mullinvat’s Joe Walsh and Ger Anthony.

There are eight pairs in the senior competition with last year’s beaten finalists, Timmy and David Clifford the first to take the court against Mullinvat’s Joe Walsh and Ger Anthony.

Timmy and David will be looking to go on step further this time and are many people’s favourites to go all the way.

The next two quarter-finals will be played this evening (Wednesday) with all the winners going through to Friday’s semi-finals. At the end of a hectic schedule the senior final will be played on Friday (9.15pm).

There are also eight pairs in the Open competition which starts on Saturday morning. Sixteen of the top players in the country will take to the courts on Saturday with Michael ‘Ducksie’ Walsh and Tom Sheridan kicking off the action against Limerick’s up and coming stars, Seamus O’Carroll and C.J. Fitzpatrick.

There will be four quarter-finals played on Saturday morning with the semi finals commencing at 4.30pm. After the play on Saturday, the Dicksboro GAA club will host this year’s function which begins at 8pm.

There will be live music and finger food as well as a raffle.

On Sunday a girls’ juvenile exhibition will be played at 11am which will be followed by the boys team of four final at 11.45am. The Open final will then take place at 12.45pm.

The tournament was a massive success last year with some excellent games throughout the weekend. This year’s event is expected to be even better.
