Taoiseach opens new third-level facility in Kilkenny

Taoiseach Enda Kenny was in Kilkenny today to open the new research and innovation centre based in St Kieran’s College.

It was the Mr Kenny’s first official visit to the county since his election to the Office of Taoiseach. The opening of the new world-class facility marks the latest progress in the plan to establish a university in the south east.

“It is a privilege for me, as somebody who is a big supporter of the GAA, to come here to St Kieran’s in Kilkenny - a renowned nursery for future stars and a training ground for tomorrow’s big games,” said the Taoiseach.

“I want to thank Bishop Seamus Freeman and St Kieran’s in what they are doing in bringing this centre into being.”

Twenty research staff will initially be based at the new centre, with this number expected to increase. The centre - a joint initiative between Waterford Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology, Carlow - will lead advances in next generation internet development for the financial services sector.

“Kilkenny can lead on this,” said the Taoiseach.

“They have that killer instinct to really get going there; as you do on the green fields, you can do the same on the science and technology area, I have no doubt.”

In his concluding remarks, the Taoiseach said the cooperation between WIT and ITC marked positive progress in the quest for a south east technological university. He said the talent and skills were evident within the region.

“Young people are out there now who are going to be creating the next apps, or the next Facebooks or the next Googles,” he said.

“They are here in the south east. Go and find them.”
