Athletic Club - Following a successful Co. Cross Country championships Thomastown athletes headed to Avondale Forest Park, Wicklow for the Leinster Championships. While underfoot conditions were difficult due to a constant drizzle on the day and a tough course local athletes performed very well. Ciara O’Keeffe had a great run U12 to take an individual medal in 7th place and led the co team to bronze medals while the club team with Ciara, Sinead O’Keeffe, Ellen Ryan, Orla O’Keeffe and Emily Taylor were 7th of 16 teams. In the boys’ U12 Gerard Prentice also had a good run and was the 7th Kilkenny athlete home with the Co team getting gold medals. The club team of Gerard, Jack Ryan, Tom Holden, Liam Treacy and Peter McDonald all running in the Leinsters for the first time and out of age put in a good performance but were out of the medals. Caoimhe Kelly, also out of age, ran very well U14 and was the 7th Kilkenny athlete home with the Co team taking silver medals and qualifying for the All Irelands. In the girls’ U16 race Ailís O’Shea put in a fine effort and won a silver medal with the Co Team. Seán Power was up with the leaders from the start of the boys’ U16 race but unfortunately three falls in the race proved costly but he still managed to take an individual medal in 4th place. Sean and James Power were part of the Co Team which won silver medals. In the U18 race Sinead Whelan had a great race taking an individual medal in 10th while Megan Morrissey missed out by one place but with Maeve O’Connor and Niamh O’Shea providing good back up the club team won bronze medals.
