St. Canice’s: A whopping 18 teams that took part in the Drive for Liam

Underage Squads- Four Dicksboro players : Evan Carroll, Edward Moylan, Chris Kavanagh, Cian Butler along with mentor Simon Walton enjoyed terrific success over the weekend in being part of the victorious Tony Forristal U14 All Ireland tournament win for 2012. Three games on Saturday : a 0-10 to 1-06 close finish over Limerick, a 2-05 to 0.04 points win over Tipperary and a 1.06 to 0.03 in the semi final over Galway saw Kilkenny U14s qualify for the final in Walsh Park on Sunday. Following a close first half, the Kilkenny lads eventually romped home on a 1-12 to 1-05 scoreline over Waterford to record a fantastic win in this prestigious tournament. Coincidentally, Kilkenny last won the tournament in 2005 captained by Dicksboro`s Martin Gaffney along with his teammates, Danny Kenny, Philip Byrne, Kevin Nolan and David Glynn. All the Kilkenny underage squads were in competition last weekend. The Kilkenny under 15 squad, which included, Andrew Gaffney, Robert Murphy, Jim Dollard and Aidan Nolan reached the final of the Michael Foley Tournament in Wexford, only to be narrowly beaten by Wexford by a goal. Corey Cahill, who had the privilege of captaining the Kilkenny under 16 team was unfortunate not to pick up silverware when beaten in the Shield Final. John Hanrick’s heroics on goal for Kilkenny’s second under 16 team in the game against Tipperary helped secure a victory but the team were unfortunate not to progress despite also beating Clare. The Kilkenny under 17 squad, also captained by a ‘Boro player, Evan Cody, along with teammates, Stephen Farrell and Paddy Cahill (inj), lost out to Cork in their final by two points. The future of hurling in the ‘Boro is looking very bright indeed.
