Thomastown well represented in “Pirates of Penzance” - This year Kilkenny Musical Society celebrates its 40th birthday – that’s a musical production every year since 1973 for music lovers in Kilkenny. Early productions took place in The Friary Hall but moved to the beautiful Watergate Theatre when it opened in 1993. To mark this very special milestone the Society has chosen Gilbert and Sullivan’s masterpiece “The Pirates of Penzance” for its 40th anniversary production. “Pirates” will be staged at the Watergate Theatre for 7 performances opening on Sunday 7th April. This will be a magnificent production with an 11 strong orchestra, a chorus of 50 - half of whom are men! - and the usual high standard production values now associated with our performances. The lead role of Frederic will be played by St Mary’s National School teacher Kevin Reade. And among the chorus will be Gerry Gardner and Elaine O’Hara. “Pirates” opens next Sunday night and runs until the following Saturday. With great comedy, and a fantastic score that includes songs such as “Cat Like Thread”, “A Policeman’s Lot”, Poor Wandering One” this is a production not to be missed.

Exhibition - Award-winning member of the Irish Watercolour Society, Anne McLeod will hold an exhibition in the Watergarden Gallery in Thomastown opening on Friday, 12th April. Anne’s paintings of flowers, landscapes and animals are distinguished by strong composition and a depth of colour which brings out the lively patterns of light and shade. Her first exhibition in the Watergarden two years ago aroused great admiration both for her skill in the medium and for her individual ‘take’ on the beauty of the natural world. Since last year she has started giving occasional workshops in Inistioge and anyone interested in taking part in one should contact her via her website: www.annemcleod.org. The exhibition is open 9.30 - 5 Tuesday - Friday until May 10th.
