Clara- St Colmans NS annual field day on Sunday June 16

Clara’s Junior B team had a very good win last Tuesday evening against Carrigeen in the first round of the Joe Walsh Cup in glorious weather. The first score of the match Clara’s Brian Prendergast a free out wide on the 20 meter line. Jason Byrne followed this with another point for Clara. Carrigeen got their first score of the game with a pointed free but lara’s Conor Phelan canceled this out with a point of his own. Carrigeen came right back into the match with a goal and a point before John Brennan and Jason Byrne grabbed a point each. Carrigeen followed these scores with another goal and 2 points to give them a 5 point lead. Clara battled hard and after a good ball into Brian Prendergast he turned his marker and headed for goal only to be brought down. Brian stood up to take the resulting free himself and rifled it to the roof of the net. Carrigeen quickly added another point from a free before Brian Prendergast ran at the Carrigeen defence again and buried the ball in the net for the second time. Jason Byrne and Brian Prendergast both got points before the half time whistle sounded. The half time score Clara 2-7 Carrigeen 2-5. Like the first half Clara opened the scoring in the second half and like the first half it was a pointed free scored by Brian Prendergast. Carrigeen scored the next 2 points of the game before Jason Byrne got his first score of the second half. For the next 10 minutes there was no scores for either team with the defences coming out on top. With 10 minutes left upped the pace of the game and after a great ball into the forward line Trevor Cummins broke onto the ball and struck the ball on the ground into the bottom corner of the net. Jason Byrne followed this with a pointed free, but Clara didn’t let up there and after some hard work Noel Kehoe broke through the Carrigeen defence and found his spot in the back of the net with a well placed shot. Jason Byrne got another 2 points either side of Jason Barcoe’s point. Carrigeen scored the final score of the game a point, this was their third score of the half which says everything about the Clara backs and mid-fielders. Final score Clara 4-13 Carrigeen 2-8.
