The parish lotto with a jackpot and of 8,000 euro was not won, small winners were 30 euro Frank Brennan 25 euro Bridie Bergin, 20 euro Simon Dwyer . The lotto will be in the Dec’s Bar , on June 17 with a possible jackpot of 8,300 euro. Tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.

Our Lady’s Meadow Parents Council are hosting a major fundraiser event “ Who wants to be a Thousandaire” in the Castle Arms Hotel on Saturday June 15 at 8 pm. The show promises to be a great event and tickets are available from the parents, school office and at the door on the night. It is your chance of winning a prize of 1,000 euro all for fifteen euro. All proceeds will go to the costs of the new classroom . The parents council look forward to your support and thank everyone for such great support so far.
This years Litter Challenge which is run by the Tidy Towns Federation of Laois Co. Council has started on June 4 and judging will be on a regular basis until end of July. We ask everyone to help in this challenge by keeping their areas litter free. Judges will call to all areas so please check your area daily for litter. We also appeal to all business to make sure that outside their premises there no cigarette buts. This is a no no with the judges. Last year Durrow received to marks in the county and we need to do it again this year. So please help by making sure your area is tidy and litter free.
Well done to all the ladies from Durrow who took part in Flora Mini-Marathon on Monday June 3 ,over twenty five ladies ran for various charities and a considerable sum was raised by all. Many thanks to everyone who supported them. The ladies finished off their day with a beautiful meal in the Castle Arms Hotel and enjoyed a lovely nights entertainment by Billy. Best of luck to the Laois High Nellie’s Harriers who are cycling around Laois to raise funds for the hospice . They start in Portlaois on June 12 and travel the roads and bye ways and finish up in Durrow on June 16, “Blooms Day” where the town will be transported back in time to a Blooms Day Festival.
Durrow/Cullohill parish and surrounding parishes were deeply saddened to hear of the death of John Alley, Bishop Wood, Durrow ,on Sunday morning June 02 following a long illness suffered with great faith and dignity. A former principal of The Holy Family boys school in Durrow the late John Alley was loved and cherished by his many former pupils and their parents. A great teacher many of his pupils are in great careers thanks to his dedication and love to teaching. A excellent sportsman in many different codes, John was a super hurler and won many medals and trophies , a former captain of Abbeyleix Golf Club John won many prizes and praise for his excellent skill on the golf course, John was keen gunman and his eye for the target was always first class. In later years John became involved with the community council being chairman and secretary for many years, John was the founder member and first chairman of the Parish Lotto. His love for the game of hurling brought John to get involved with the local GAA club .
The death of John is a huge loss to the Alley Family and to the community of Durrow . He was held with the greatest of esteem by everyone and came from a family held with high regard in the area. His death is a huge loss to his loving wife Bea, son Colm, daughters Sinead, Emer, Niamh and Lucy ,brothers Peter, Pat and Ger, sister Josie, ten grandchildren, extended family, nieces, nephews, cousins and a huge circle of friends. The huge attendance at his wake, removal to the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Durrow on Monday night and funeral Mass and burial on Tuesday was a testament to the high regard everyone had for the Late John and to offer to Bea and her family their heart felt sympathy at their great loss. A guard of Honor was given to John by Harps GAA Club, Durrow Parish Lotto and Durrow Community Council and by Abbeyleix Golf Club on Monday night. Sincerest sympathy to the Alley family . “Ar Deis go raibh ainm”

The annual pilgrimage to Knock from Cullohill is on Tuesday July 2 . names to any ICA member as soon as possible please.
