We are fortunate to have Barrowvale Local History Group in the Goresbridge area and for several years they have been putting on exhibitions during Heritage Week. It is fair to say that the exhibitions have been really super over the years, this year should be no different and as it is the year of the Gathering, the theme is about families that live or lived in the area: Drennan, Barcoe, Murphy, Kinsella, Whitford, Donohoe, McCormack, Tyrell, Shortall are some of the stories being told.
There will also be a feature about the founding of the two churches in Goresbridge and lots more. The Exhibition takes place from 17 to 25 August in Ionad Dara and will be open on weekdays from 2 –6 and 7- 9 and from 2-6 on weekends. There is no charge but you are welcome to make a donation if you wish. Bring the children along they always enjoy it especially as there will be a display of an Irish kitchen and the utensils used.
Only a few weeks to go for the Goresbridge Community Park draw. Tickets cost €20, if this park is to become a reality it needs for every household in the Goresbridge area to buy at least one ticket, it is tough times and people are hard strapped for money but if you don’t support ventures like this in your own area, then who will.
This park won’t happen overnight and it’s not just a park, there will be an Astro turf hard surface for sports, a playground, a walking/running track, a sensory garden, allotments but can only happen if you are prepared to support it. The area is at the back of the school and our national school children will benefit enormously from it into the future.
You may be even able to sell a couple of tickets to family members who may not live in Goresbridge at present. The draw will take place on August 31 and tickets are available from David Holmes 087 2369902, Damien Keyes 086 2325300, Peter Breen 087 9787666, from other committee members or there may even be someone calling to your door. First prize is €2,000, €1,000, €500, €200 and €100.
An Autumn/Winter Fashion Show will be held in the Lord Bagenal on September 11 at 8.30 sharp. Tickets are only €10 and you will have a chance to win the door prize. This is going to be the fashion event of the year and not to be missed, so say the organisers. All funds raised will go towards Barrow Rangers Hurling Club.
A special committee has been formed for this event with Helen Mullins from a Touch of Class being to the forefront. It will be compared by well know fashion guru, Faith Amond. Tickets are now available in the Goresbridge area from Colette Murphy 087 2601672 or from Catherine Blake.

John Maher, Barrowmount Road completed his 200 mile journey from Goresbridge to Derry and those of us that followed him on face book really enjoyed his daily updates. It looks like he has raised approx € 4,000 for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. If you would still like to support John and this very worthy cause you can drop in the money into Goresbridge Post Office as there is a sponsorship card there.
John would sincerely like to thank those of you who already sponsored him and encouraged him along the way and he is overwhelmed by the generosity of people and those he met on his travels. Congratulations to John, it is a huge achievement and the people of Goresbridge are no doubt proud of you also.
Congratulations to everyone that sat their Leaving Certificate first of all and well done on the results. It is the one thing that still gives people Goosebumps, those that have gone before and many a person still has nightmares about when they did it.

The Kayaking Summer Camp that took place in Goresbridge last week was a huge success, there were just twelve places available this year and the 12 young people on the camp enjoyed every minute.
Thanks to Leader for sponsorship towards the Summer Camp and to Paddy McCormack from Pure Adventure who made sure that the young people had a brilliant time and have great memories for the summer of 2013.
