NAOMH BRID CAMOGIE

The Under 12 team was in action against St. Anne’s, at Johnstown, in round 4 of the League, on Monday, August 12th.The team has been playing well ,but finding it difficult to convert possession into scores. On a beautifully prepared pitch, the well matched teams served up a cracker of a match. Sinead Walshe won the toss and took advantage of the breeze in the first half. However, it was St. Anne’s who applied the early pressure and following a great save by Thanh Phelan, the game remained scoreless. Five minutes in, St. Anne’s pointed from play and this was followed by a goal a minute later. The home team continued to dominate, but hit two wides before scoring another point after 8 minutes. Naomh Brid settled down after that and Ciara Brennan worked hard to create scoring opportunities. Finding the range proved difficult, as both defences contested every ball and tackled bravely. After some strong pressure Sinead Walsh’s ‘45’ was cleared from danger after 15 minutes. Our forwards kept trying and a perfect pass from Mollie Southgate was pulled on by Clodagh O’ Doherty, whose ground shot flew to the bottom corner of the net. The referee blew the half time whistle on the puck out, leaving us in arrears by 1-2 to 1-0.  When St. Anne’s pointed 3 minutes into the second half it looked like they might pull away, but from there to the finish Naomh Brid played some brilliant camogie. Despite the severe pressure, our defence was brilliant. Thanh made three splendid saves and pucked out cleverly against the breeze. Lauren Phelan had some great clearances, Michaela Ryan made several well timed tackles and Kiara Walsh played her part. Sheila Brophy was impressive at centre back; the midfielders Mary- Kate Brennan, Sinead Walshe and Sinead Morrissey had a tough job and spent much of the game helping their defence. All three players had their best games of the season.

Up front, Zoe Gleeson got some ball to her inside forwards and Ciara Brennan was full of energy and keen to attack. Ciara moved back to defence for the last ten minutes and was also effective in that role. Mollie Southgate managed some good passes and nearly had a goal, in the second half, while Clodagh O’ Doherty saw more action in the first half and took her goal well. Well done also to Chieu Phelan, who came on in attack and Lara Dowling, who is now fully recovered from an early season injury. The final score was 1-3 to 1-0.
