While elsewhere in the country the crowds were cheering on the stars of the Giro d’Italia, the good folk in Ballinakill were cheering on a bunch of hardy cyclists who took off for a 40km tour of the sights and sounds of south County Laois.

They were part of a group of athletes and supporters who were on a fundraising cycle, walk and run for Heywood Community School. The event was organised by the Heywood Parents Association and involved a 40km cycle, a 5km run and a 5km walk.

The run and walk took a scenic route through the grounds of the school, Heywood gardens, the village of Ballinakill and returned past the Mass Lough to the school itself. Over 200 people took part, and the weather stayed fine despite the threat of showers.

Refreshments were provided for the tired and happy participants in the school hall on their return. The Parents Association were delighted with the event and the support shown by fellow parents, teachers and pupils. The funds raised will be put to good use in the school.
