Kilkenny students strike gold in canoes

The annual Junior Liffey Canoe Race took place last weekend.

Ciaran Martin (fourth-year CBS Kilkenny) and Matthew Cassin (fifth-year Kilkenny College) won the Boys U18 Canadian Canoe Class. Freddie Dyer (fourth-year Kilkenny College) and Martin Mulhall (third-year Kilkenny College) came third in the same race.

Alex McClure (second-year Kilkenny College) and Clodagh Cassin (third-year Kilkenny College) won the Girls U18 Canadian Canoe Class. Alex Johnson (first-year St Kieran’s College) and John Treacy (first-year Kilkenny College) came third in the U15 Canadian Canoe Class.

The race was six miles long going from the Salmon Leap Canoe Club in Leixlip to the Strawberry Beds between Lucan and Palmerstown. There were four weirs on the stretch of river; Sluice, Lucan, Annaliffey and Wren’s Nest.

The beautiful weather brought out many competitors for this great race.
