Durrow: World record on hold

Lotto - There was no Jackpot winner. Winners on the night were 30 euro Helen Mooney 25 euro Ben Dunne, 20 euro Teresa Dunphy. The lotto of October 22 will be held in Durrow Inn with a possible jackpot of 3,550 euro. All tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.

Fishing - Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers held a pike fishing competition for the Con Geoghegan Memorial Cup on Sunday. The winner was Simon Dwyer, 2nd was Seamus Stapleton, 3rd Tommy Coffey. The final competition of the season will be held on Sunday October 21 and it will be for pike fishing. All members will be notified by “ text” during the week with full details of the competition.

High Nellies - The World Record Attempt at the Largest High Nellie Wheel has been postponed for one week and now will take place on Sunday October 21 at 1. 30 pm. Come along and join the Durrow High Nellie club in association with Bob’s Bar and www.highnelly.ie in this world record attempt. There will be music and BBQ and everyone is asked to participate in this unusual event by dressing up in period fancy dress but not essential. Great day assured and come along to be part or a world record attempt.

Daffodil Appeal - Durrow Tidy Towns and Durrow Development Forum are planning to plant daffodils on both the Cork Road and the Kilkenny Road in the near future. A lot of bulbs will be needed and we are asking any householder, or business or individual who would like to sponsor a bag you can contact Noleen at 087-9636460 and donate twenty five euro. Your help would be appreciated. Last year there were bulbs planted on Abbeyleix Road and the entrance to Durrow was a sea of Golden Daffodil. There will also be a plea for help to plant these bulbs and if you have a hour or two, maybe a half day that you would spend planting it would also be much appreciated.

Blood - The Blood Transfusion Service Donor Clinic will be in Castle Arms Hotel, Durrow on Thursday October 18 from 4.30 pm to 8 pm. Help ensure essential blood supplies are always available by giving blood at this clinic. We appeal to the people of the area to attend this clinic and donate blood as there is need for over 3,000 units every week. Give somebody the perfect gift, the gift of life.

Floral Demonstration - Give yourself a “ Halloween Treat” by attend ing a floral demonstration by Oliver and Martin Lawlor, Lawlor’s Florists, Durrow in the Parocial Hall Rathdowney on Thursday October 25. All proceeds will go to aid of Erkina House and meals on wheels , Rathdowney. Admission is seven euro and it starts at 8 pm. All floral arrangements done on the night will be part of the raffle. All welcome to come and support two good charities and enjoy a night of floral extravaganza.

Golf - The date of the next outing of Jack’s Golf Society has been changed and the new date is November 24 in Rathdowney Golf Club for the Christmas Hamper competition. Tee times are from 11 am to 12 noon. To book a tee time cal into Dec’s Bar or contact Declan on 087 9893044.

Whist - The Killermogh Parishes Monthly Whist Drive will continue on Thursday October 25 at 8 pm in the Parocial Hall, Cork Road , Durrow. All are welcome. This whist drive will continue on the last Thursday of every month until summer time 2013

Death - The parish of Durrow /Cullohill and surrounding parishes were shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death of Bill Walsh, Cullohill, at his residence on October 2. A member of a very highly respected farming family in the area the late Bill Walsh was held in high esteem by everyone. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, son Jimmy, daughters Marie, Annette, Eileen, Frances and Carmel, daughter in law Bernadette, sons in law, grandchildren, relatives and a huge circle of neighbours and friends. The huge attendance at his wake, removal and funeral mass was to offer to the Walsh family their deepest sympathy and to pay their last respects to a wonderful man. His remains were removed to St. Tigearneach’s Church, Cullohill on Wednesday evening and burial took place in adjoining cemetery after Requiem mass on Thursday. Sincerest sympathy is extended to Mary and the Walsh family on their great loss. May he rest in peace.

Cycling Club - The Ossory cycling club are holding their first Annual General Meeting in O’Reilly’s Pub on Thursday night October 18 at 8.30 pm . It is hoped that all members will attend and cyclists from the Durrow/Cullohill area are also welcomed to come and join . All are welcome

Sponsored Walk - The Laois Domestic Abuse Service are holding a sponsored 5 km walk in Durrow on Sunday October 21 starting at 1.30 pm. Sponsored cards are available from the L DAS office opposite the Gardai station in Portlaois or alternately come along on the day and give a donation. We appeal for great support from all walkers as the demands on this service is growing year on year, this year to date the service has to date helped over 224 women.
