Pride of Place-On Friday next July 13 the judging for Pride of Place will take place in Durrow . Every one is asked to make sure outside their houses and business premises are clean and litter free. As it is Friday the weekly bin collection will be ongoing and every bin holder is asked to bring in their bin as soon as it is emptied and to make sure there is no rubbish around. Every little thing will make a difference, so on Friday morning put your town first , make a big impression for the judges and hopefully the sun will be shining while the judges are in town.
McKenzie-The death took place in St. Luke’s Hospital , Kilkenny on Thursday July 5 of Margaret (Margo) McKenzie of 14 St. Fintan’s Terrace, Durrow, peacefully following a long illness. A member of a much loved and highly respected family in the parish the late Margo will be greatly missed. A great character, Margo was an icon in her time, much loved by young and not so young, her death has brought great sadness to her family, her friends and her neighbours. Margo was predeceased by her husband Dinky, and is survived by her daughters Caroline and Denise, sons Alan and Noel, sisters Molly and Bernie, Daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, brothers-in law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends . The large attendance at the wake and rosary, removal and funeral paid their respects to a perfect lady and to offer to the family their hearth felt sympathy at their great loss. May she rest in peace.
Garden Party-Gearoid Ryan, Sub-Officer with Durrow Fire and Rescue service was one of four members of Laois Fire and Rescue Service to attend a Garden Party hosted by President M.D. Higgins and his wife Sabrina in Aras an Uachtarain to pay tribute to the great work done by each emergency service. The country is blessed to have such qualified emergency personnel in many different areas and the president wanted to acknowledge their great service. Well done to all an honor well deserved
Lotto -The parish lotto of July 2 was not won, small winners were 30 euro Julie Fitzpatrick, 25 euro Thomas Gavin, 20 euro Bernie Lennon. The Lotto of July 16 will be held in the Durrow Inn with a possible jackpot of 1,450 euro. All tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.
The Members of the Parish lotto and all lotto players wish to extend to the McKenzie family their heath felt sympathy at the death of Margo. The late Margo was a great supporter of the lotto both at selling and buying tickets, she will be greatly missed.
Fishing-Durrow and Cullohill Parish Anglers postponed their Fly Fishing competition for the Super Value Cup fixed for Friday night July 6 as a mark of respect to the death of Margo McKenzie . Margo was a super member of the club and every week sold many tickets for the club in the parish lotto. She will be sadly missed.
The competition is refixed for Friday night July 13 ,entries taken at Lawlor’s Flower shop from 5.30 pm to 7 pm . Weigh-in will take place in Durrow Inn at 00.15 am . Usual rules apply
Walk-As part of the Laois Festival of Walks there will be a walk held in Capponellan Wood, Durrow on Thursday night July 12 at 7.30 pm sharp. This is a grade two walk. Two euro per walker but children are free with adults. This is a lovely easy walk suitable for all ages. All are welcome to come and join in a lovely healthy pastime
Bus-As a result of Bus Eireann changing their Route 8 bus service through Abbeyleix, Durrow, Cullohill and Johnstown a new bus shuttle service has been in operation since July 1 for six weeks until Saturday August 11,2012. This service will operate six times a day from Johnstown through Cullohill , Durrow, Abbeyleix and to Portlaoise leaving Johnstown at 08.40, 10.40 12.40, 14.40 16.25 and 18.40.
A return shuttle will leave Portlaoise to Johnstown via Abbeyleix, Durrow ,Cullohill at 9.20, 11.20 13.20 15.20 17.20 and 19.20.
This service will operate from Monday’s to Sunday’s inclusive.
This service will allow bus users to connect to the many services from Portlaoise including Route 8 Cork-Dublin-Dublin Airport and Route 12 Limerick-Dublin-Dublin Airport.
This service will only continue after August 11,2012 if Bus Eireann sees that there is a need for such a service. It is up to the people of Durrow and surrounding areas to use this service as often as possible so that we will have a link to all areas by bus.
Fishing-Durrow/Cullohill Parish anglers held a Pike Fishing competition for the Michael Monahan Memorial Cup. The winner was David Walsh, 2nd Tommy Coffey, and 3rd Seamus Stapleton
