THE GATHERING 2012 - Carlow is invited to be part of The Gathering Ireland 2013 The Local Steering Committee will hold a special Community Meeting in the Lord Bagenal Hotel, Leighlinbridge, on Tuesday, July 17, at 7pm to discuss the Gathering in Carlow in 2013. All are welcome to attend the meeting which will offer an opportunity for local people to learn more about the initiative and how they can be involved. The Gathering Ireland is a people’s project - it’s all about family, neighbourhood, sports clubs and communities throughout Carlow and is an exciting opportunity for everybody to show what is best about the county by organising family gatherings, school reunions and business events to coincide with the Gathering in 2013. BAGENALSTOWN SUMMER FESTIVAL - The Festival takes place this year from July 20 to 22. There are various new events this year, including the return of the traditional raft racing, a Festival King and Queen Competition. The big event will be “I’m a Civilian Get Me Out of Here” which is a three day event based on the popular television programme “I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here” Ten local men and women will stay in the old Credit Union building for the duration of the Festival. They will take on challenges and trials in the hope of winning €300. There will also be a comedy hypnotist upstairs in the Estoria Restaurant, High Street, on Saturday, July 21 at 9.30am. Tickets €5 can be bought in advance from any committee member. Festival brochures will be available shortly.

SUMMER OUTING - Fenagh Newtown Nurney Senior Citizens Summer Outing takes place on July 12 to Powerscourt Gardens with dinner in the evening at the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow. If you intend to travel please give your name to a member of the committee. WELL DONE -to Bernie Kelly, Bernie Williams and Nicola Kelly who took part in the mini marathon in Dublin recently and raised €1,000 for the treatment of children’s diabetes in St. Lukes Hospital, Kilkenny.

SUMMER OUTINGS - Bagenalstown Active Retirement Association is organising two Summer outings this year. Monday, July 16 to Lullymore Heritage & Discovery Park, Rathangan. EITHNE RYAN TOURS - There will be a bus going to Tramore on Sunday, July 15, taking in a visit to the Kilkenny markets. Bus will leave the Fire Station at 8.30am. If interested contact Vera on 97 27313 or Kathy on 91 46371.

TIDY TOWNS - The Bagenalstown Improvement Group collection will take place on the week-end of July 12. All money collected will go towards plants for the flower beds around the town, paint, weed killer etc. BIG asks people in the community to help clean up their areas and not to forget the back lanes as the Tidy Towns judges miss nothing The residents of Maple Drive, Beechwood Close and Fr. Cummins Park have been out doing a general clean up. There is very little litter in the centre of the town. BIG reminds people to take away their take-aways and not leave them on the streets, use the bins or bring them home. Be careful not to throw rubbish in the river, not only does it look horrible but is a danger to wildlife.

CROAGH PATRICK - Pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sat. Sept. Cost €100 per person includes bus, one night bed and breakfast and an evening meal in McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, which is ten minutes from Knock. BAGENALSTOWN COMMUNITY GAMES - Area 15: Athletics Finals. The County Athletics Finals took place on June 23 and 24 in Ardattin. Congratulations to all the children who took part in the wet and cold conditions. There was one gold medal for Area 15 and that went to Shauna O’Neill for the U12 Ball Throw. Shauna will now go on to represent Carlow in Athlone at the end of August and the whole of Area 15 wishes her the very best of luck.

Other medal winners were Sean Hickey who won silver in the U6 60m Sprint. Colin Byrne won 3rd in the Long Jump, Liam Murphy came 4th in the U14 Hurdles and Aoibheann Byrne got a bronze in the U14 800m. Congratulations to all.

AGM - The AGM of the Muine Bheag Kopites, the official Liverpool Supporters Club, was held on June 21 in the Kilree Arms. There was a big attendance and the following officers and committee members were elected - Chairman Mick Lillis; Vice Chairman John Darcy; Secretary Darren Thompson; Asst. Secretary Pa Dwyer; Treasurer Jimmy Doyle; Joint Asst. Treasurers Kevin Power and Martin O’Mara; Joint PRO Officers James O’Hara and John Dermody. Committee members: Jim Cummins, Eamon Tobin, Mick O’Neill, Brian Tuite, Johnny Dowling, Peter O’Rourke, Pa Deane, Liam Dowling and Conor Power.
