COMMUNITY SCHOOL ATHLETICS- 21 athletes travelled to Clongowes Wood College to represent CCS at the South Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships recently. For each their selection for the team was the culmination of a winter of preparation; during this time regular sessions generated a new level of fitness for many of the team. From these sessions was created also a sense of belief and a spirit of endeavour which empowered them as they struggled in this most testing of disciplines.

The Minor boys team was Daragh Dooley, James Buggy, Adam Lawlor and Adam Jacob. Junior Boys Representatives were Conor Dowling, Pierce Nash, Oisin Ryan and William Hayden. Numerically strongest team was the Intermediate Boys - Conor Delaney, Cian Byrne, Aidan Murphy, Sean Buggy, Ben Hamilton, Laurence Feehan, Daniel Barcoe and Robert Reid. Eddie Johnson was the sole runner from Castlecomer in teh Senior Boys race.

Grace Rossiter and Lucy O’Neill competed in the Junior Girls race, while Kelsey Warburton carried the CCS colours in the Inter Girls race.

All performed admirably - Sean Buggy was 13th in a field of over ten times that number and so qualified for the Leinster Championship in Santry Demesne this week. Conor Delaney’s 16th position in the Intermediate race left him just one place short of joining Sean at the provincial championships. It is anticipated that it will be but a matter of time and experience before Conor makes the breakthrough to provincial championship ranks. Indeed such is the dedication of this group that others too may well reach this standard.

Castlecomer athletics enthusiasts will be anticipating the involvment of these athletes in the South Leinster Track and Field Championships after Easter. For the long distance runners whose talent thrives in the cross country setting, long distance races beckon. In addition, for those whose fitness levels are now high but whose strength is their speed, the shorter race opportunities will welcome indeed.

GET INTO SHAPE-Fitness, Aerobics and Body Conditioning classes continue in Castlecomer Community Hall every Tuesday night from 8pm – 9pm. Call Eilish on 085 7879842 for more information or to book your place.

The Department of the Environment has also asked that local authorities submit requests for funding under the Rural Water Programme 2013 where schemes might be viable at this level of grant. Typically these might be close to an existing scheme whereby all that is required is the extension of the scheme to a group or cluster of houses.
