Go Games - On Thursday, April 4 the Danesfort U-8 boys travelled to Croke Park to play Harps from Durrow. Bus left Danesfort at 10.30am and arrived in Croker at 12.30pm. In the lovely spring sunshine we sat on the steps of the Cusack Stand and tucked into our packed lunches.
Supporters took their seats in the Hogan Stand and players and trainers to the dressing rooms. Tensions were high and our players wanted to get out onto the pitch to do their job.
Danesfort emerged from the tunnel to a huge ovation. The game started slowly, Harps had an early chance but a save from Adam Barden kept them scoreless. Patrick, Anthony and Mark were on top in mid-field and Oisin, Niall and Billy were getting chances to score but Harps defended well. A wonderful sideline cut from Anthony Ireland Wall hit the net and gave Danesfort the lead.
The half backs Sam Hayes, Kieran Walsh and Cian O’Reilly were now on top and Danesfort struck again, with a second goal from Anto before the break. With words of wisdom from the three wise men and fresh legs, Danesfort piled on the pressure in the second half and Anto added four more goals to his impressive tally.
Great work from Oisin Gargan, Edward Whelan and Darragh Dwan managed to keep Harps on the back foot. Some great team play created a chance for John Davis who finished to the net in style. Harps added two late goals. However it was left to Anto, who wrapped things up with his 7th goal and Danesfort finished worthy winners of 8 to 2.
The winners made their way up the steps of the Hogan Stand and each player got to lift the Cup to great cheers from their supporters. This day will be remembers by everyone, especially this great bunch of players who managed to keep up the Danesfort record of never been beaten in Croke Park; played 3 won 3. The day finished with a trip to Supermac’s in Carlow.
