Amount of weight lost: 14 and a half stone.
Amount of inches lost from their waistlines: over 13 feet.
These are the statistics for the 17 people who participated in the Newpark Hotel Escape Health Club and Spa’s eight-week fitness challenge that concluded earlier this month.
And such has been its success that 40 people have already enrolled in the next challenge.
The challenge was open to members and non-members of the leisure centre, and people enrolled for various reasons, said organiser Grace McCormack.
Some wanted to lose weight, some wanted to gain muscle tone, and one participant simply had never been to a gym before and wanted to learn what was involved.
So participants came for their weigh-in each Wednesday, and in the course of the challenge were also given information about diet and nutrition.
Participants were asked to keep daily diaries outlining everything they ate and drank – and whether they did so out of hunger or simply out of a craving. They also recorded how they felt for the day.
Their exercise diaries likewise tracked their physical activity each day, whether in the gym or in a fitness class or outdoors.
As an incentive, there was the offer of a two-night stay in another of the Flynn-owned hotels in Cork, Ennis or Dungarvan – but Ms McCormack said the participants were all so driven by improving their fitness that that was a prize for all involved.
