DAVID LANIGAN MEMORIAL RUN - The David Lanigan memorial Motorcycle Run will be held on Saturday,16 June. Due to the success of this event in 2010 it was decided to hold it again this year. All proceeds are in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

The bike run will take place from Slievenamon (Lisrona) Golf club which is located between Clonmel and Fethard. Check in time is 12 noon. The entry fee of €15 will include a souvenir patch, finger food and entry to the Rock Nite which will be held following the bike run.. Donations to the cause are also welcome, however small, it all adds up.

The distance is approximately 80 miles and is suitable for both old and modern motorbikes.

The Rock night will have two live bands performing, Ignition and Joker’s Wild. A raffle will also be held on the night. A great day and night is promised for those who support this worthy cause.

SCHOOL TOURS - St. Aidan’s National School Tour Agenda is as follows: 8 June: Third and Fourth class tour took them to the Tayto Park in Co. Meath. Thursday, 14 June: First and Second classes will visit the Chocolate Factory in Tullow and Kiddies Kingdom in Bagenalstown. Friday, 22 June: Junior and Senior Infants will visit the Reptile Village in Gowran and Kiddies Kingdom in Bagenalstown. Monday, 25 June: Fifth and Sixth classes will visit the University of Limerick Activity Centre.

EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS - The Eucharistic Congress will take place from 10 to 17 June with a bus travelling from Knocktopher on 17 June. Tickets to Croke Park have yet to be allocated to the various parishes or information can be obtained by ringing 01 2981122.

SPORTS EVENING - St. Aidan’s National School, Kilmanagh will hold their sports evening on Monday, 18 June at 7:00pm in the hurling field, Kilmanagh.

LEVEL 4 FETAC CLASSES - The Droicheád F.R.C. in partnership with Co. Kilkenny VEC’s Back to Education Initiative (BETI) are currently accepting applications from all early school leavers interested in participating on the following FETAC Level 4 accredited programmes in Callan (1) Horticultural (4M1994) and (2) Office Skills (4M2070).

It is expected that both programmes will run in the Droicheád FRC from (:30am to 2:00pm for days per week over the September 2012 to June 2013 period. FREE places are available on this part-time programme to applicants with Junior Certificate standard of education. Priority for places will be given to those in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance and/or Job Seekers Benefit.

FAMILY FUN DAY - Only a couple of weeks away now and preparations are continuing for the annual Ballykeeffe Family Fun Day being held on 24 June. Once again this exceptional venue will be a hive of activity, having the return of the Mountain Rescue Team, and also Julie McCormick returns with her engaging puppet show. Moonshine Balloon Magic is an amazing show that is part clown and part magician and produces elaborate balloon sculptures.   There will also be the Arts and Crafts Table, Irish Dancing, Lively entertainment, Bouncy Castles, Tug of War, Meet Pet Calves and Lambs and various other farm animals. You can enjoy the Barbeque, and have a look at the new Canopy which is the committees pride and joy. There will also be a baking competition with First and Second prizes Admission: €3 per adult. SUNDAY SERVICE CANCELLED - Due to the annual car rally there will not be a Sunday Service in St. Aidan’s Church on 24 June.

TABLE QUIZ - Kilkenny County Camogie Board are hosting a table quiz in Springhill Court Hotel on 28 June. More details to follow.

SUMMER CAMP - Droicheád Summer Camp will run for one week beginning Monday, 15 July until Friday, 20 July, 2012. It will be held from 10am until 2pm in Droicheád Childcare, Mill Street, Callan. The camp will cater for children from 4 to 11 years of age. Activities will include music, dance, art and crafts, baking, sport, treasure hunt, water games and a display from Gowran Reptile Zoo. The cost will be €60 per child for the week.

F.A.I. COURSES - The F.A.I. are now taking applications for upcoming courses to include the UEFA ‘B’ Licence, the UEFA Licence Reassessments and the Goalkeeping ‘B’ Licence (including reassessments). Application forms/information can be obtained from Greig Paterson, National Co-ordinator of Coach Education with FAI on 01 8999563 or from www.fai.ie/coaching.

LOCAL LOTTO - Numbers drawn on Tuesday, 5 June were 18-29-32. There was no winner of the €600 Jackpot. Congratulations to the five winners of the €30 prizes. Promoters’ prizes went to Mary Dunphy, Bree Harrison and Martin McGrath.

WEDDING DAY - The wedding of Paul Dunne, Ballycloven and Kirsty McMahon, Burnchurch took place recently. Fr. Benignus Buckley, OFM Cap. was celebrant of the nuptial mass. Paul’s brother Gavin was best man and Kirsty’s sister Frances was bridesmaid.Kirsty’s nieces were flowers and her nephew was pageboy. Singing, appropriate to the occasion, was beautifully sung by a group from Cork. Musicians were Jim Maher, Frank O’Brien and Dan Ryan. The wedding breakfast was held in Hotel Kilkenny. Paul and Kirsty are wished many happy years of wedded bliss by the parish communities.

WEDDING BELLS - The wedding of Moira Cody and Christopher O’Shea took place recently. Moira’s chief bridesmaid was Margaret Cleere and Sarah Butler was her second bridesmaid. Christopher’s friend Richard Webster was best man and his brother Anthony was groomsman. The two flower girls were Kirsten Cody and Jessica Cuddihy and both were resplendent in their attire. Also looking very handsome were page boys Ryan Cody and Matthew Breen. The communion reflection was read by Moira’s cousin Edel O’Hara. The musicians were Miriam and Colm Rooney who played and sang appropriate music and song.

Chief celebrant of the nuptial mass was Fr. Richard Phelan, P.P. The reception was held in Newpark Hotel. The local parish communities wish Moira and Christopher many years of health, peace and happiness.

SPECIAL CELEBRATION - The 250th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Edmund Rice was celebrated with a special mass in the parish church, Callan on Sunday, 3 June. Bishop Seamus Freeman was the chief celebrant. Co-celebrants were Fr. W. Dalton, PP, Callan and Fr. Donal, OFM, Cap. Kilkenny. In his homily Bishop Freeman spoke glowingly of the brothers for their contribution to the church and education.

The parish choir with Director Sr. Sheila and organist Michael Hayes sang appropriate hymns and liturgy pieces from the Glendalough mass composed by Fr. Liam Lawton.

Members of the Christian Brothers and the parish community were participants in the responsorial psalm, prayers of the faithful and offertory gifts. At the conclusion of the mass three young students from Coláiste Eamon Rís sang a beautiful hymn to Blessed Edmund with the choir singing the refrain. Incidentally this hymn was composed by Sr. Lucio (Rita) Lynch, M.M.M. Her sister Josephine composed the music.

The parish communities of Ballycallan, Kilmanagh and Killaloe send their beset wishes to the Christian Brothers and Westcourt and elsewhere. They thank you for your contribution to the spiritual life of the parish and for their excellent and valuable contribution towards the education of the parish young. They thank you for the monthly mass and for their participation in the week of prayers for the canonisation of Blessed Edmund.

THANK YOU - Sr. Mary Brigíd (Finn) wrote a lovely letter recently to Acorn parish newsletter in which she thanked the people of Ballycallan Parish for their good wishes and generosity to her on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee recently. She gave a special thanks to Fr. Kieran O’Shea for his kind words and lovely mass. Thanks also went to Canon Richard Phelan, PP, Canon Tom Murphy and Rev. Fr. Denis Purcell for their attendance and good wishes.

Sr. Mary then thanked the choir, sacristan, servers, readers, gift bearers and those who looked after the flowers and also the Ladies Committee and Hall Committee for the lovely setting and fabulous food. She said it was a very enjoyable evening and way beyond her expectations. Also many thanks to all who attended.
