Freshford: Race night at St. James Park on Friday evening the August 31

GAA NEWS - MINORS ARE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS - St.Lachtains Minor Hurlers won the League final on Saturday evening last when they defeated the Rower/Inistioge at Bennettsbridge on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-14pts. The game was evenly contested in the first half and the Freshford side led by one point at the break after playing with the aid of the breeze. St.Lachtains went three points up mid way through the second half but the Rower side kept coming back and pulled the lead back on a few occasions. With just a minute remaining they led by three points and the Rower pressed hard for the equalizing goal and but for a brilliant save by goalie Darren Brennan the game could have gone to extra time. However Freshford boys held out and went on to win by a clear goal. It was a great team effort by the local young hurlers each playing their part in the victory. The Club haven’t won a Roinn A final since back in 1978 and there was a connection with that last winning team as local Club man Paddy White was part of that 78 team and his son Paul was playing on the winning team on Saturday evening. Paddy has been a Trojan worker for Bord na nOg and the local Club for many years. Andy Cleere was also part of the 78 panel and his son Jack came on as a sub on Saturday evening last. Well done to the lads and their mentors and selectors and manager Noel Maher and his backroom team and all involved in the victory.
